Thomas Luthi has claimed an unexpectedly comfortable victory for the Moto2 race at Motegi - In a calculated display the Suisse rider handed out a lesson in how to ride at the front and control a race. Luthi had a fantastic start aboard his Suter as both he and Johan Zarco mobbed Tito Rabat away from the line and into turn one. Mika Kallio and Maverick Vinales were quick to follow them through as Rabat was left floundering. Luthi managed to edge away with metronomic consistency as Vinales and Rabat were left to scrap it out over second place having left Zarco and Kallio behind.
Luthi had built his lead to over two seconds by the half-way stage of the race as Vinales tried desperately to bridge the gap. With six laps to go Vinales had managed to reduce Luthi's lead to an even second, however the race-long leader was the epitome of composure, managed the gap and held on to take his third Moto2 victory, his first in over two years. MotoGP-bound Maverick Vinales crossed the line in second place; two seconds ahead of clear pre-race favourite Tito Rabat.
After a difficult opening to the race Rabat could afford to settle and just accrue Championship points as his main title rival Kallio struggled further down the field. Frenchman Johan Zarco claimed fourth place ahead of Kallio who narrowly managed to hold off Italtrans rider Julian Simon. Simon's team mate Franco Morbidelli took seventh spot while Hafizh Syahrin, Ricky Cardus and Xavier Simeon rounded out the top ten.
