So this is what is has come to for Marc Marquez at the Circuit if the Americas: He is quicker than the field even after a short jog to his backup bike. He's not only quicker, he can set a new lap record after his primary bike breaks down. Marquez's 2'02.135 pole-position time on Saturday now stands as the new fastest motorcycle lap ever at the COTA track near Austin, Texas. And yes, he broke the record he also happened to hold.

Andrea Dovizioso, who had been leading the session before Marquez's fast lap on his backup bike, held on to second with a 2'02.474. Jorge Lorenzo continued looking sharp to complete the front row. Valentino Rossi, who had held third for a portion of the session, was dropped to the lead position of the second row in fourth. Alongside him for the Sunday race is Cal Crutchlow who had been quick at COTA all weekend. Scott Redding -- like Crutchlow on a satellite Honda -- closed his gap to Crutchlow with a 2'02.674, a half a second off the leader.

Andrea Iannone, who along with Maverick Vinales advanced from Q1, put his factory Ducati into seventh, just in front of Aleix Espargaro (8th). Espargaro's brother, Pol, completed the third row with the ninth-fastest time. Bradley Smith rounded out the top 10. 

The session's drama centered around Marquez who broke down late in the session without the fast lap under his belt. He left his bike leaning against the track fencing and jogged down pit lane to get his backup bike.  With only moments left, he blitzed around the course to set the fastest-ever lap. The Spaniard has yet to concede pole position to another rider in the three years MotoGP has been in Austin.

Hayden half a second behind rookie Miller.
It looks like the young kid is really starting to come into his own. Hope he can finish a race...

What was doubly impressive with Marquez was the second bike didn't have the right front tyre on and that didn't matter. It must be demoralising to be on the same grid as him.

This man needs a nickname for all the fire he burns everyone with. Yet ice cold way the way he deals with any issues. Unbelievable. Others did well, but Marquez takes the cake today. Hate on what I am saying if you want, but this dude is already at legendary status and he keeps adding to it.

Not a fan of some of of the 'desperate' manoeuvres he pulls from time to time, but the way he pivots that Honda on the front and turns it under power is awesome. Whilst his ruthlessness is sometimes irritating in its' Senna-like focus, every race I sit there transfixed.
He has raised the bar, he's at least as quick as Casey, with more appetite for dicing up close and personal, and not afraid to stick it underneath the very best like Jorge and Vali.

I count myself very lucky to have lived in this era, which may well one day be referred to as "The Golden Age of Motorcycle Racing".

Can't wait for my upcoming trip to the Isle of Man TT Races and later Assen TT. I'll be at Strubben, amongst the great unwashed, going nuts at The Cathedral. Giddy up!

The scary thought is, Marquez is probably 5-6 years away from his peak.

At 22 Rossi was just winning his first premier class championship.

What an amazing feat by Marquez, the guy in unreal on that Honda. Achieved pole and broke the track record on his backup bike that had “the wrong front tire” Aoyama qualified 18 out of 20…I suspect that Stoner would have fared better. Looks like it might be a wet race, I wonder if the new GP15 does as well in the wet as the old bike (for a full race). Hayden’s quote from a few years ago was classic, “Ducs love water!” I know that Friday’s wet practice time had Dovi just finishing ahead of Marquez for fastest lap. I usually don’t like to see wet races but this one may be an exception.

So, factory Honda bike circulating only just in front of Jack Miller who is on the cut-down Open class version.

Anyone else think it's a huge waste? What a disgraceful soft-c*cking effort by HRC not to have let Casey have the ride.

Not to take anything away from Jack Miller, who is doing splendidly on under-spec machinery, but Aoyama's performance is atrocious - does anyone seriously think Stoner would not be doing better on that Repsol Honda? Or Miller on the Repsol, for that matter?

agreed wazman, CS27 would have at the very least put in a couple fast laps & maybe running in Q2, I doubt he'd play it safe. I personally thought it a big deal he was even considering it, same as David.

Anyhow, 43 is doing very well. He has a 3yr contract, i think he earnt it in 2013 on that Honda in moto3 & not to forget runner up last year.

It's worth noting that the top six, including Mr. Redding, are inside of Marc's lap record from last year. Maybe he's finally finding his groove? Having both satellite Honda Brits in the mix could certainly make things interesting.
