Johann Zarco made up two positions in a frantic last lap to take his second win of the year Sunday at the Catalunya circuit in Spain. Moto2 rookie Alex Rins, who entered the final lap in third place, seized second with Tito Rabat grabbing the final podium spot after leading into the final lap.
Sam Lowes finished a lonely fourth place. Luis Salom just managed fifth in front of a hard-charging Thomas Luthi (6th). Jonas Folger, race winner at the last Spanish contest at Jerez, held on for seventh. Franco Morbidelli (8th) and Dominique Aegerter (9th) crossed the line nearly neck-and-neck with Lorenzo Baldassarrijust behind them to round out the top 10.
Rabat, last year's champion, led the race in the final laps but could not pull any distance from Rins and Zarco who were right on his tail. On the final lap, Rins ran slightly wide and allow Zarco through and into second. The pole-sitter immediately latched onto Rabat's tail. Rabat then also ran slightly wide and slipped into second under pressure from Zarco. As Rabat pursued Zarco, he again ran wide and allowed Rins through.
Zarco leads the championship.
