LAP RECORDS
Lap records can only be set in a race.
A rider can go under the lap record in practice or qualifying, but that is not the lap record.
However, a rider who qualifies under the previous best fastest qualifying time for that class at a particular circuit can be said to have broken the pole record.
Lap records
There are two kinds of lap records: Fastest lap and lap record. The fastest lap is the fastest lap ever set during any timed session, practice or race. The lap record is officially the fastest time set in the race.
To save time and space, and not bore readers rigid with explanation, we assume they understand the difference, and refer to lap records in both cases. It may be technically wrong, but we assume our readers are intelligence to look past the shorthand and understand what we are referring to.
