2015 Qatar World Superbike Superpole Results: Speed Under Floodlights

The nighttime schedule at Qatar, the last race weekend of the year, has the fourth untimed free practice after Superpole and World Superbike qualifying began a little later than it was scheduled to after the delays in World Supersport qualifying.

In the first Superpole session, Niccolo Canepa set the first fast lap but was immediately beaten by Leon Camier. Camier improved on his own time a lap later with Canepa second quickest, within a couple of tenths. Sylvain Guintoli missed out on the first half of the session and headed straight out to the second half with the qualifying tyre and no practice.

Once again, Canepa was first out with the stickier tyre, quicker than Camier's race tyre time in most sectors, slicing three tenths off it at the line, but Leandro Mercado took the fastest lap off him.

Sylvain Guintoli took second quickest but was knocked down to third and out of promotion by David Salom setting a fastest time of 1'58.481, stealing the top spot from Mercado.

Salam and Mercado joined the fastest men in the second session to determine the top twelve grid positions.

Jordi Torres, fast all weekend, set the benchmark on race tyres with a 1'57.926 with his teammate Leon Haslam a tenth slower, but Tom Sykes peeled a hundredth of a second off that. Torres parried with a 1'57.673 and Sykes riposted with another five hundredths of a second, the fastest lap on regular rubber to hang over their heads as they all changed tyres for the last six minutes.

With under a minute to go, Sykes and Torres were unassailed in the top two spots, but the timing screen was filled with red sectors as eight riders were on pole position pace.

Leon Haslam was the first to beat Sykes's time, followed by Chaz Davies, Davies's teammate for the weekend Xavi Fores and Jonathan Rea, but Sykes was the last man to complete a lap and he punched Rea into second place with a 1'56.821.

Matteo Baiocco didn't finish his last lap as he crashed out before completing it, limping off after a hard landing.

Fores attributed his first front row start to following Rea through the fast bits. Rea is aiming at getting more points than anyone ever in World Superbike tomorrow, surpassing the records of Bayliss, Edwards and Checa. His front row start helps with that, but he warned of the pace of Jordi Torres. Sykes's pole position was his sixth of the year.
