2016 Austin Moto3 QP: The Wet Rearranges The Order

Rain again played a role at the Circuit of the Americas Saturday with Philip Oettl taking the first pole position of his career with a lap well off top practice times this weekend but set just before sporadic rain limited traction and speed. The German rider's 2’18.398 was a half-second faster than Jorge Navarro's second-place QP time as light rain first forced riders into the pits and then left the track too damp in spots to set good times late.

Enea Bastianini took the final spot on the front row as many riders elected to not finish the qualifying session in the mixed conditions. Jakub Kornfeil leads the second row with Romano Fenati in fifth and Adam Norrodin completing the second row. It was Norrodin -- his first podium finish a single corner away in Argentina -- who crashed in a wet patch and pushed his bike across the line to take 11th last week.

Andrea Locatelli, his qualifying time in the slippery conditions not equaling his FP1 time from Friday, grabbed seventh, just in front of Jules Danilo (8th). Fabio Quartararo, who had been at or near the top of the timesheet this weekend, settled for ninth. Livio Loi completed the top ten. A handful of top riders -- Aron Canet, Joan Mir and Niccolo Antonelli among them -- will start at the rear of the grid as the rain limited their chances to set fast lap times late in qualifying.
