2016 Assen Moto3 Qualifying Result: You Win Some, You Crash Some

The threat of rain forced riders to push right from the start, some doing so more successfully than others. The usual suspects showed their cards with fast laps all throughout the session, half a second covering the top fifteen.

The waiting game started with fifteen minutes to go, as it went worryingly dark. Riders went out as spots of rain hit the track, causing a trip through the gravel for Enea Bastianini, who still managed to hold on to a first pole position of the season thanks to his previous run.

Andrea Migno grabbed second on the grid with a helpful tow from teammate Nicolo Bulega, who lines up behind him on the grid, in third. The Sky VR46 hat-trick is completed by Romano Fenati in fourth place. He will share the second line of the grid with championship leader Brad Binder and a surprising Juanfran Guevara.

Home hero Bo Bendsneyder warmed up the audience with a stellar seventh position, followed by the two Fabios: Quartararo and Di Giannantonio.

Niccolò Antonelli slipped into the gravel trap in the first ten minutes, repeating the performance in the final minute to end a disappointing session for the Italian, who starts tomorrow’s race in thirteenth position.

But perhaps the biggest surprise of all was rookie revelation Aron Canet, who could not put all his good work to use in qualifying, suffering a spectacular crash very early in the session. The incident left his bike looking like junk yard décor, his team possibly earning a massive Christmas bonus for getting him back on track for a final time attack. He made the most of the opportunity, climbing from last to sixteenth.
