With some more sun on the menu for the MotoGP class, the riders were eager to assess their pace in fully dry if slightly chilly conditions. One might say a little too eager, both factory Ducatis crashing on their outlap within two minutes of each other in the same turn ten, followed soon after by Jack Miller making it safely through a scary crash into turn one.
Meanwhile, the Yamahas showed off their pace and their internal winglets by claiming the top three in the debut of the session, with Maverick Viñales on top of Johann Zarco and Valentino Rossi.
The order wasn’t there to stay as Dani Pedrosa showed a massive improvement after the disaster of FP3 to climb into second position. Rossi remained third, with home favourite Johann Zarco fourth after giving the audience another reason to cheer by briefly topping the session.
Cal Crutchlow claimed fifth, ahead of Alvaro Bautista, the last two riders within half a second of Viñales.
Marc Marquez also tested the gravel in turn three after a crash in the final ten minutes, taking the scenic route back through the paddock and giving his number two machine a go – and by ‘go’ I mean a time fast enough for seventh and another spectacular save.
This morning’s fast man, Scott Redding, ended up eighth, in front of a much-improved Aleix Espargaro and Andrea Dovizioso.
Jonas Folger also added to the list of crashes, getting a big shake while trying to save a highside and having to settle for thirteenth, with Lorenzo’s crash not particularly helpful in getting back some confidence down in eighteenth.
