2017 Assen MotoGP FP4 Result: Zarco Gets the Slick Window Right

The sun decided to come out and play at the beginning of the fourth practice session, prompting the riders to get a quick taster of the conditions before heading back to the garage to have their bikes prepared for dry conditions.

Only a handful of riders decided to stay out for more than one lap on wet tyres, as the mechanics kept busy with set-up changes, while keeping an eye on the forecast that threatened with another shower.

Johann Zarco was the first brave soul to try the slicks but just as others looked to follow, the rain flag was back out for some more drizzle around the track. The Tech 3 rider was rewarded with the fastest lap of the session, his rivals failing to improve after the rain returned. FP3 leader Scott Redding gave his sponsors some airtime while everyone else was waiting for the weather to make up its mind.

The umbrellas were properly out with ten minutes left of the session, when the wet tyres went back in and the riders went back out to face a mixed track, with mostly wet but a few nearly dry sections around. The conditions created some big gaps in the timesheets, with Zarco leading Jorge Lorenzo, who also posted an early time, two tenths down on Zarco.

Alvaro Bautista, Jack Miller and Valentino Rossi were also in the group who posted laps in the beginning of the session, the trio over two and a half seconds down on the leader. Andrea Dovizioso led the group that only did a final outing, the Italian sixth, ahead of Marc Marquez and Danilo Petrucci – all of them over four seconds slower than the leader.

The Ducati of Redding and the KTM of Pol Espargaro completed the top ten, Dani Pedrosa snatching eleventh despite not being the biggest fan of the conditions. The likes of Maverick Viñales and Aleix Espargaro did not feature yet as they decided to sit this one out.
