MotoGP Race And Practice Results

The final practice session for the premier class got underway after a delay due to a power cut and the soaring temperature at the Sachsenring soon made itself known with a couple of early trips to the gravel for some of the quickest men of the weekend. Fabio Quartararo managed to avoid that faith and led the session throughout, ending practice half a tenth quicker than Pecco Bagnaia – the Italian enjoying the thrills of a high-speed ride through the gravel at turn eight. Joan Mir picked up the pace to climb into third, with Jack Miller in fourth after an early crash at turn 13 and an impending investigation for crashing under yellow flags.

Franco Morbidelli made a bit of a return to the business end of the timing screens with fifth in the session, trailing his teammate by less than two tenths of a second, while Miguel Oliveira also found some speed and consistency on route to sixth position. Johann Zarco and Maverick Viñales kept close, only three tenths off the lead, while Takaaki Nakagami and Fabio Di Giannantonio rounded out the top 10 covered by half a second.

After a tough start to his weekend, Alex Marquez came within five hundredths of a second of the top 10, while Enea Bastianini continued to struggle, down in 17th position. Although only 16th on the timesheets due to an early tumble at turn 13, Aleix Espargaro’s position is not really reflective of the speed he showed throughout the weekend and the Spaniard will be hoping for a lot more come qualifying. A notable absence in FP4 was that of Alex Rins, who decided to sit out the rest of the weekend while still struggling with the injury picked up in Catalunya.

Temperatures were soaring as the intermediate class enjoyed their final practice session at the Sachsenring and in typical Moto2 form, times came tumbling as soon as riders took to the track. Although they eventually had a go at a pretty uncharacteristic time attack to close FP3, it ended up being more of an intention rather than impacting too much on the timesheets. Filip Salac took over the top of the timing screens only three laps into his day and the time was quick enough to keep him there until the end of the session, the Czech rider topping practice in his closest-to-home GP.

Aron Canet had some on-track trouble to match the off-track drama but despite an early tumble at turn one causing him a nosebleed, the Spaniard made the most of his limited running and climbed up to second, two tenths off top spot. Friday’s leader Augusto Fernandez was one of the last men to improve his time but did do eventually, to secure third on the timesheets, ahead of a particularly impressive Bo Bendsneyder. Pedro Acosta joined the top five after a sluggish start on the timing screens, with compatriot Albert Arenas, Joe Roberts and Alonso Lopez also posting times within half a second of the leader.

Cameron Beaubier and Fermín Aldeguer rounded out the top 10 positions, ahead of Lorenzo Dalla Porta, Sam Lowes and Manuel Gonzalez. All eyes were on championship rivals Ai Ogura and Celestino Vietti for the final couple of minutes of FP3, the duo fighting it off for the remaining ticket into Q2, the Japanese rider coming out on top by a mere three hundredths of a second. That leaves Vietti in the not-too-unfamiliar position of having to fight his way through Q1, against the likes of Marcel Schrotter, Tony Arbolino, Barry Baltus, Jorge Navarro or Jake Dixon, whose session was derailed by an early fall at turn three.

Results:

A very generous Sachsenring, temperature-wise, greeted the lightweight class for their final practice session but that did not stop the man of the moment, Izan Guevara, from improving the all-time lap record in Moto3. The young Spaniard spent most of the session at the top of the timing screens and ended FP3 just under two tenths of a second quicker than Ayumu Sasaki. The rather impressive David Muñoz climbed up to third, ahead of another standout performance of Scott Ogden – both rookies edging ahead of championship leader Sergio Garcia, who seems to struggle to match his teammate’s pace at this stage.

Ryusei Yamanaka was the final rider to post a time within half a second of the leader but with John McPhee, Dennis Foggia and Jaume Masia close behind. Friday’s leader, Tatsuki Suzuki, was one of the few riders who failed to get any quicker on Saturday morning but his FP2 benchmark was enough to keep him safely inside the combined top 14. Similarly, Joel Kelso secured a Q2 place even with a low key FP3 down in 19th position. Despite a late tumble at turn 1, Andrea Migno kept 12th place on the combined timesheets, with Daniel Holgado and Carlos Tatay joining him in Q2. With Deniz Öncü pushed out of contention at the last second, the Turkish rider will have to deal with Q1, in good company from the likes of Riccardo Rossi, Stefano Nepa, Diogo Moreira or Xavier Artigas.
