2022 Sachsenring MotoGP Qualifying Result: As You Were…
Submitted by Zara Daniela on
The hot asphalt at the Sachsenring prevented another attack at the lap record during qualifying but Pecco Bagnaia did his best to defend that achievement, the Italian leading the way throughout Q2 to secure a third pole position of the season. Fabio Quartararo had to push until his final flying lap to bridge the gap to his rival and eventually managed to join him on the front row of the grid, less than a tenth off pole. With compatriot Johann Zarco only two hundredths of a second slower, Quartararo will have to deal with a Ducati ambush into turn one, while Aleix Espargaro will have to fend off two Ducatis of his own from the second row of the grid. The Spaniard opens the way from impressive Q1 leader Fabio Di Giannantonio and Jack Miller, who is still awaiting a verdict on his practice crash under yellow flags.
Luca Marini leads a youthful third row ahead of Jorge Martin, who looked pretty solid throughout the weekend despite being fresh off the surgeon’s table. The duo will be joined by Maverick Viñales, the Aprilia man half a second off pole and aiming for a better start this time around. The lone Honda in Q2 did not fare that well, Takaaki Nakagami rounding out the top 10 after a late tumble at turn one, but the Japanese rider was still quicker than Q1 graduate Marco Bezzecchi and a confused and confusing Joan Mir, the Suzuki man slowest in Q2 and eight tenths off pole. Meanwhile, teammate Alex Rins ruled himself out of the rest of the weekend after giving it one final go in FP3.
Q1 produced quite a few surprises, starting with Pol Espargaro missing out on Q2 by only four thousandths of a second, continuing with no KTMs making it through and ending with Enea Bastianini struggling to even match his teammate and getting stuck in the middle of sixth row.
