2017 Spielberg Moto3 FP2 Result: Good Timing For Canet

The rain that soaked the end of FP1 and caused a bowling session mid-Moto2 had stopped by the time the lightweight class reconvened for afternoon practice. With rain tyres on a drying track, half the grid decided to bide their time and wait for drier times, the likes of Joan Mir, Marcos Ramirez, Romano Fenati or the RBA duo only joining with a dry setup in the final fifteen minutes.

On the tricky drying track, with completely dry sections followed by drenched tarmac, top position was exchanged rapidly - Niccolo Antonelli top of the standings by the time a mid-session pitstop saw all riders switch to a dry setting.

Aron Canet lit up the timesheets in the final five-minute dash in much improved conditions, before coming across a rain shower in turn three. That settled the hierarchy with three minutes remaining of the session, the young Spaniard keeping top position by over three tenths of a second.

Adam Norrodin briefly held top spot as well and was robbed by another shot at glory by the suddenly changing weather. Enea Bastianini got back some feeling on the bike he had recently decided to leave and set the third fastest time, little over half a second behind his teammate. Fenati was also a contender to make FP2 headlines but he missed a final run as the rain started falling while he headed out the pits, the Italian dropping down to fourth.

Gabriel Rodrigo in fifth, Phillip Oettl in sixth and Maria Herrera in seventh were the only other riders within a second of Canet, with Jules Danilo, Tony Arbolino and Fabio Di Giannantonio completing the top ten.

John McPhee didn’t seem to enjoy the conditions as much as usual, the Scotsman thirteenth, but he had a better time than Nicolo Bulega in twenty-second. Championship leader Joan Mir dropped down to twenty-seventh position after only posting six timed laps in the final minutes of the session.

Still convalescent Jorge Martin coped well in FP1 despite his injury but did not want to take any risks in the sketchy conditions and did not go out for FP2.
