2017 Lausitzring World Superbike Superpole Results: A Farewell To Lap Records

Stefan Bradl and Randy Krummenacher were declared fit, Bradl suffering a crash yesterday and Krummenacher crashing today, and would both take part in Superpole one.

After the first flying laps, Raffaele De Rosa opens with a 1’38.758. A lap later, Xavi Fores deposed him and the two sat in the top two promotion places as everyone, apart from Davide Giugliano who stayed out for another lap, returned to their garages to change their tyres. Michael van der Mark was on pace to go to the top as he pulled into the pits.

Randy Krummenacher met Ricardo Russo half way round the track and had a polite discussion over track positioning. Russo was announced to be under investigation for his relaxed attitude to qualifying.

Leandro Mercado briefly took the top spot, but both Fores and De Rosa pushed him down to third but as the flag came out, Michael van der Mark was on a blistering pace and he crossed the line over half a second quicker than anyone else this session with a 1’37.518 lap ahead of Xavi Fores.

With van der Mark and Fores heading to Superpole two, Raffaele De Rosa, Leandro Mercado and Stefan Bradl making up the fifth row for this afternoon’s race. Van der Mark’s fast lap would have put him third quickest in yesterday’s qualifying.

Van der Mark and Fores joined the top ten to settle the front four rows in the second session and everyone set out on their cheap tyres for a few laps.

Eugene Laverty was the early fast man, building on what’s been a strong showing by the Aprilias so far with a 1’36.854 outright lap record, ahead of Jonathan Rea. A lap later, Marco Melandri sneaked past with a 1’36.827 while Tom Sykes put himself into third place.

Tea break, fancy tyres.

Chaz Davies was first out with the yellow-banded Q tyre and he was immediately on the pace, recording a 1’36.761, but Tom Sykes came out fighting, setting fast sectors all round his lap.

While Sykes was on pace for pole position, Marco Melandri knocked Davies to second, but birthday boy Tom Sykes, a surprisingly quick Lorenzo Savadori and Jonathan Rea all knocked him off the top. A lap later, Jonathan Rea showed how much life the new qualifying tyres have and pushed himself into second place, making a lot of time in the last sector, just two tenths off his teammate’s pole position.
