2017 Jerez World Superbike Superpole Results: Fast, Fast, Fast

The morning was laden with fog, but cancelling the World Superstock untimed session got the schedule back on track. Tom Sykes would be trying to match Troy Corser's Superpole record of 43 pole positions.

After the first lap of Superpole One, Leon Camier was quickest with a 1'40.859, quicker than his quickest laps this morning and all of yesterday. Another lap later, he matched his lap, quicker by only six thousandths, but Leandro Mercado took top spot by only a tenth of a second. Xavi Fores was knocked down to third place and out of the promotion spot by Mercado's lap.

Riders pitted in for a tyre change, as usual, with the top five riders all lapping within three tenths of a second of each other. With a new tyre, Alessandro Andreozzi was on target to improve on his fourth place but lost all the advantage he had as he ran off the track at the end of the lap.

Leon Camier took the top spot back before the flag came out, with a 1'40.062, joined by Xavi Fores a third of a second slower in second place. With the flag being waved, nobody was on a fast lap and the session was settled for the top two places and Camier and Fores progressed to Superpole Two.

Jonathan Rea was the first rider out with his teammate Tom Sykes the last. Rea set the first fast lap of 1'40.2, but Leon Camier took four tenths off him immediately, making the most of the experience gained in the first Superpole session. Tom Sykes then reminded us that he's on target to match Troy Corser's Superpole record with a 1'39.859 on race rubber.

Marco Melandri, on his second fast lap, went eight tenths quicker than Sykes with a 1'39.773 and held the bragging rights into the mid-session tea break. Melandri, Sykes and Rea were the only riders under 1'40 on regular tyres.

With the faster Q tyres fitted, five riders immediately went quicker than Marco Melandri, the fastest of whom was Melandri himself, with a 1'38.960 ahead of Jonathan Rea and Alex Lowes, and the flag came out with nobody on a quick lap and the front row was settled with Melandri's new outright lap record at the top.

Tom Sykes headed the second row, alongside Michael van der Mark and Lorenzo Savadori, so he will have to wait for the last round in two weeks to see if he can match Troy Corser's Superpole record. Marco Melandri's pole position was only his second career Superpole pole position and Alex Lowes's third place was his first Superpole front row this year.
