With five days of testing complete at Jerez, the balance can be drawn up for the riders in all three series which were present. Conditions were almost perfect, with five days of sunshine and reasonably warm temperatures for the time of year. The track resurfacing, which took place during the summer, helped immensely, especially for the MotoGP teams, as they rode here on the old surface back in May.
The temperatures suited the WorldSBK riders better than the MotoGP teams. Track temperatures were closer to those prevalent at the WorldSBK weekend back in October, but nearly 20°C cooler than in May for MotoGP. Michelin had brought the same compounds used back in May, though there were no complaints from the riders.
Andrea Dovizioso finished the test as fastest overall, the factory Ducati rider a quarter of a second under the pole record set by Jorge Lorenzo back in 2015, and six tenths faster than the pole time from this year's race. Cal Crutchlow was second fastest overall, a tenth of a second under the pole record on the LCR Honda, and a tenth faster than Jorge Lorenzo on the other factory Ducati.
Jonathan Rea was fastest of the WorldSBK riders, and fourth fastest overall on the Kawasaki ZX-10R. The Kawasaki man was vastly faster than he had been at the Spanish round of World Superbikes: a whole second under the lap record set by Marco Melandri in October, and just two hundredths of a second slower than Jorge Lorenzo's MotoGP pole record.
Rea was one of three WorldSBK riders under the series pole record. Tom Sykes was a third of a second slower than his teammate, and eighth fastest overall, while Pata Yamaha rider Alex Lowes was three tenths slower than Sykes and eleventh fastest of the 39 riders who had lapped the track at some point during the week.
The fastest times set by each rider during the week appear below, in a list of all classes combined, as well as sorted separately by class. Below that appears a table where the riders are sorted by improvement over the different days of the test, once again both as a combined list as well as sorted by class.

I don't get it...
Maybe things have changed, but I've been working under the assumption that SBK machines are 40-50 hp down on the MotoGP bikes. Not only that, but they're based on production machines, whereas the latter are race-driven prototypes.
So if that's the case, where do the millions of dollars spent on MotoGP exotica really go--I mean, if Rea and Sykes can put themselves in the top 10 of a fairly representative set of top machines and riders?
Or it it just that Kawasaki pour as much money into the ZX-10R as they would a MotoGP effort, and that the bike is so exotic that it might as well be a prototype?
tires
were sbk times set on qualifiers?

On Friday, Yes for the Kwaks
Rea and Sykes set thier times on Q tyres but they only did 1 single flying lap each early on in the day. Also they were both on the new spec, low revving, ~12 BHP down, 2018 motors.
Lowes and VDM apparently were on race tyres

Suzuki tried to beat Rea
Ianone and Rins (mostly Ianone) both put a super soft Michelin in on Friday in an attempt to beat Rea’s time. Ianone was apparently quite annoyed that a super bike was faster than him and really really wanted to log the fastest time on Friday.
Suzuki did convince Michelin to give them some supersofts but it wasn’t enough, he still couldn’t beat Rea.
How much difference is there between a Pirelli Q and a Michelin super soft race tyre is unknown but it would be very surprising if there was more than 2-3 tenths in it either way. How would a Kwak sbk go on Michelin and carbon brakes? Probably slower than it would on Pirelli’s and steel without some significant alterations to chassis stiffness and suspension response.
Obligatory MotoGP vs WSBK question
Now that we have both classes on the same track at the same time, can somone please confirm the fastest WSBK lap on non-qualifying tires? Even if we're missing the factory Honda and Yamaha teams.
Merry Christmas everyone!
Conclusions vs social media bun-fight
I don't think the social media excitement about WSB riders vs MotoGP riders was really the best conclusion to draw from the times.
The conclusion I drew is that the fact that the top couple of WSB teams are so much faster than the top BSB teams present [...and so close to MotoGP times] demonstrates exactly why WSB is struggling to put on thrilling races. Obviously there is a different rule spec between the two series - BSB being a lot closer to Superstock, which is largely echoed in most Superbike race series where Superbikes and Superstock generally run together or are the same thing - which means no wildcards running their national spec bike will do anything in a dry WSB race. Likewise if a top national superbike team steps up to WSB they will have to put in some decent investment (which they might not be able to afford to along with increased travel costs) to compete with Kawasaki and Ducati's factory teams who are at no fault but are working within a rule set which allows them to spend their way on electronics getting them close to MotoGP performance and too far out of reach of private teams. Some of the private WSB teams are probably much closer to stock regulations than we think. The WSB field is too spread out in terms of performance compared to MotoGP, BSB, and indeed compared to the European Superstock 1000 championship which has great racing (and parity between manufacturers) but the TV coverage gets buried, almost like they don't want us to know they run a great litre class championship on the same bill as WSB.
Why run a Superbike championship where the spec is so much higher than all the national series?!?
