Marc Marquez leads the way after the first five hours of testing at Buriram, the Repsol Honda rider just a fraction faster than his rival from last year, Andrea Dovizoso. Given the comments last night that the track was a lot like Austria, then to see Marquez and Dovizioso with a clear advantage should hardly surprise.
Tech 3 Yamaha's Johann Zarco is currently third quickest, nearly four tenths behind Marquez, and a fraction ahead of Movistar Yamaha man (and 39th birthday boy) Valentino Rossi. Danilo Petrucci is fifth fastest on the Pramac Ducati, while Andrea Iannone has the ECSTAR Suzuki in sixth at the moment.
As Johann Zarco predicted on Thursday, the times are very close. Apart from Marquez and Dovizioso, there are a big bunch of riders within a second, from Zarco in third all they way down to Bradley Smith in nineteenth. Hafizh Syahrin has made a relatively successful debut so far, 3.1 seconds behind Marquez, and just over a second behind Tom Luthi, on the Swiss rider's second outing on a MotoGP machine.
There have been a fair few crashes at Turn 12, the final sharp corner onto the front straight and a very tricky point on the track. Cal Crutchlow, Dani Pedrosa, and Alvaro Bautista have all fallen there, though all without consequences. The heat has forced everyone into their garages, though the problem is more the track temperature than the air temperature. Reaction so far from rider is that the lack of humidity compared to Sepang is making the heat much more manageable.
