2018 Philip Island World Superbike Superpole Results: Windy Qualifying Plays Havoc

The first Superpole of the year took place under unpredictable weather, with a strong wind across the straight making things uncertain. Superpole one had twelve riders fighting for two promotional spots with Jake Gagne and Toprak Razgatlioglu in the two favourite places to advance.

Loris Baz, Toprak Razgatlioglu and Jordi Torres jostled about at the front, with Jordi Torres setting the first quick lap with a 1'32.779 until Jake Gagne took a tenth of a second off that. A lap later, Torres retook the top spot only for Razgatlioglu to seal down a 1'31.994, the first 1'31 lap of the session.

Jordi Torres, PJ Jacobsen and Loris Baz stayed out another lap while everyone else popped back to their box for a new set of tyres. A lap later, Baz was the only rider still out there and he advanced to third places everyone else started returning to the job at hand.

A lap later, Baz went second quickest and stayed out another lap, deciding to stay with the same tyre he started the session with. Torres, with a clean tyre, took the top spot with a 1'31.555, knocking Baz out of the top two, while Razgatlioglu improved his own time but stayed in second place.

Jake Gagne took third as Baz headed back to the pits and as the flag came out, the top two places were secured as nobody had a quick lap under them as the clock ran out.

Jordi Torres and Toprak Razgatlioglu advanced through to Superpole two with a few laps under their belts but they faced a field of faster riders.

Before anyone set a lap, Lorenzo Savadori crashed at turn six, sliding his machine into the gravel and summoning the red flags just as Eugene Laverty crossed the line, missing out on getting a lap set. Savadori was stretchered off, but he sat up to show he was ok.

Jordi Torres led Leon Camier out to the restart but let the Honda rider take the lead to start the flying lap. Camier then trashed his bike at turn four, ending his session. Jordi Torres also crashed out, putting Marco Melandri in the place of the first rider to set a lap, but Eugene Laverty a few seconds later set the first 1'30 with a     1'30.339.

Alex Lowes joined the list of crashers and limped back to the garage. Jonathan Rea still hadn't set a lap, remaining in the pits with under five minutes remaining. Everyone had pitted in with four and a half minutes remaining and finally, Jonathan Rea headed out, following Marco Melandri. Qualifying tyres would finally get used as everyone had enough time for two laps at best.

Marco Melandri put in a quick lap, getting second place, but Tom Sykes scythed a quarter of a second off Laverty's time and took the first pole position of the year.

The front row for race one later today will be Tom Sykes, Eugene Laverty and Marco Melandri. Alex Lowes leads Chaz Davies and Jonathan Rea on the second row ahead of Xavi Fores, Michael van der Mark and Toprak Razgatlioglu. The three DNFs of the session make up the fourth row. Lorenzo Savadori, Leon Camier and Jordi Torres qualify without times.
