Mugello was warming up nicely for the second run of sessions of the day, although the clouds did keep the lightweight class company. Fabio Di Giannantonio was back with a vengeance, at least for the early part of FP2, the Italian leading for most of the session before Jorge Martin’s reputation as the fastest man in class came to the fore and the Spaniard checked out at the front by over three tenths of a second to improve his own pole record.
Once again, Aron Canet was best of the rest, with only Tatsuki Suzuki in and impressive third and Philipp Oettl in fourth within half a second of the leader.
Kaito Toba brilliantly climbed into fifth position, while the Pruestel GP teammates followed him closely behind, championship leader Marco Bezzecchi only seven thousandths of a second faster than Jakub Kornfeil. John McPhee also joined the top eight, with Di Giannantonio’s early momentum running out and seeing him drop down to ninth, as he failed to improve in his late charge.
Le Mans hero Albert Arenas recovered some ground from the morning session to complete the top ten in FP2, albeit nine tenths down on Martin. The same gap separated Dennis Foggia and Marcos Ramirez from the lead, with Niccolo Antonelli back in 13th, one full second down, after a heavy high side ended his session early. If the Italian could blame his position on his visit to the medical centre, the likes of Gabriel Rodrigo, Tony Arbolino and Enea Bastianini ended their Friday outside the top 15 after struggling throughout the day.
