2018 Austria MotoGP FP4 Result: Marquez One Step Ahead

With the track still sporting some damp patches to begin with, the final practice session for the premier class was also their one opportunity for the day to find a race setup in the dry. Unlike FP3, Marc Marquez took no time to start putting in the laps on a soft rear tyre and riding around consistently in the 1:24s. The Spaniard took the lead and never let it go, with only Jorge Lorenzo getting in his comfort zone and the rest of the pack over seven tenths down halfway through FP4. Having comfortably set camp at the front, Marquez then went out on a hard front tyre more tolerant to his usual abuse but quickly returned to the more familiar medium.

Even Lorenzo trialled the hard front in the final five minutes and showed good pace in the few laps he posted on it. Previously, the Spaniard ran in the low 1:25s on used softs and dipped occasionally in the 1:24s to climb into second on the timesheets.

Teammate Andrea Dovizioso followed him closely, less than a tenth of a second back. The Italian looked a little happier than Marquez on the hard front and he used it to finally drop into the 1:24s. Andrea Iannone made a late jump into fourth position, half a second off the leader and closely followed by Cal Crutchlow. Both the Brit and Danilo Petrucci experimented on hards at both ends and finished in close proximity of each other, Crutchlow fifth and Petrucci sixth.

Alvaro Bautista added a fourth Ducati into the top seven, while Johann Zarco in eight was the lead Yamaha in the session. Dani Pedrosa finished seven tenths of a second down on his teammate in ninth, with Alex Rins completing the top ten.

The factory Yamahas continued to struggle, with Valentino Rossi 12th and teammate Maverick Viñales only digging his way out of 20th in the final couple of minutes of FP4, when he swapped to new mediums and snatched 13th.
