2018 Silverstone Moto3 FP3 Result: Kornfeil Tops Damp Morning

After Silverstone gave the first rain recital on Friday afternoon, the second morning at the track started with the infamous bumps covered in damp patches. The action was slow to start and most of the lightweight class riders only went out after the slight sun encouraged them to play and help dry out the surface. Times were nowhere near Friday’s benchmark but riders were getting faster as conditions improved significantly in the final ten minutes of the session.

The final man to cross the line benefitted the most from the improvements, Jakub Kornfeil snatching the spotlight from Philipp Oettl by three hundredths of a second. Marcos Ramirez in third was two tenths down on the leading duo, while Nakarin Atiratphuvapat was another tenth down in fourth. Fabio Di Giannantonio was one of the last men to join the damp fun but the Italian warmed up quickly to complete the top five.

Dennis Foggia posted his best time of the weekend in the tricky conditions and finished half a second down on the leader, in sixth, while seventh spot went to compatriot Nicolo Bulega. Aron Canet was late to join the action but a couple of laps were enough for him to shoot into the lead, although a rodeo moment prevented him from improving further and the Spaniard was quickly demoted to eighth position.

Jorge Martin only went out for a handful of laps himself, to sample the conditions and climb to ninth in the process, while Niccolo Antonelli did the same to round out the top ten. Marco Bezzecchi took even less risk, only joining the action for the final five minutes when the racing line was as dry as possible, posting the least number of laps on his way to an unrepresentative 21st spot on the timesheets.
