2022 Le Mans MotoE Race 2 Result: Back To Winning Ways

The MotoE cup provided the final action of the day, with no rain, no fuss and no cancan dancers but with a close battle for the podium positions until the final corner. Poleman and Race 1 winner Mattia Casadei made the perfect start to lead ahead of Kevin Zannoni, Hikari Okubo and Dominique Aegerter, while Eric Granado dropped down to 8th after the first few corners.

Casadei was quick to extend a gap of one second over the first couple of laps, while Aegerter made his way through the chasing pack to lead the pursuit at the start of lap three. In that same group, Granado was steadily recovering from the underwhelming start and making his way inside the top five but getting a track limits warning in the process.

Aegerter caught up with Casadei with four laps remaining, dropping Zannoni into Granado’s reach and with a sizeable group still in tow. Aegerter’s first attack only came on the final lap, the Swiss rider getting ahead of the Italian into the Dunlop chicane and defending all the way to the chequered flag to claim his first victory of the season, Casadei settling for second. Niccolo Canepa found some late pace to inconvenience Granado, the duo trading places a few times over the last couple of laps and the Italian then went on to chase compatriot Zannoni. Better drive out of the final corner allowed Canepa to snatch third place by eight thousandths of a second and climb onto his first MotoE podium.

Zannoni and Granado completed the top five, with the rest of the top ten occupied by Okubo, Ferrari, Hector Garzo, Marc Alcoba and Miquel Pons. A notable absence was reigning cup champion Jordi Torres, who was declared unfit due to a fractured left leg following the scary tangle in Saturday’s race.

Aegerter’s victory leaves him in charge of the world cup standings by eight points from Granado, with Casadei 17 points back and Ferrari on a 30-point deficit.

2022 Le Mans MotoGP Race Result: Heartache and Hattricks

The full capacity crowd deserved better than the moody forecast for race day and the weather gods clearly agreed, as premier class riders were greeted by clear blue skies, hot tarmac and can-can dancers. However, the dream French victory didn’t quite go to plan and it was mostly an Italian affair, with Enea Bastianini taking his third victory of the season after pressuring poleman Pecco Bagnaia into a big mistake and cruising unchallenged to the chequered flag. Jack Miller was the happy recipient of a second place inheritance, while Aleix Espargaro caused some heartbreak as he denied the home favourite a place on the podium.

Miller was the star at the start of the 27-lap race, getting the holeshot over teammate Bagnaia and with Bastianini straight into the mix to separate the two factory Ducatis. The two Suzukis were hot on their tail as well, while front-row starter Espargaro dropped down to sixth over a chaotic opening lap. Fabio Quartararo made a pretty poor start on home soil, finding himself challenged by the Hondas of Marc Marquez and Takaki Nakagami in the early battle for seventh, with Johann Zarco waiting to pounce too.

Alex Rins was keeping up with the fast-starting Ducatis early on but maybe not as comfortably as it first seemed, the Spaniard losing control around turn two and taking a familiar trip through the gravel at the Dunlop chicane, crashing as he rejoined the track at turn four. He thankfully avoided any collision and the incident left the Bologna bullets with a second's advantage at the front. The poleman soon attacked his teammate at turn seven, retaking control of proceedings on lap four while Bastianini pushed to catch up with his colleagues, bringing Joan Mir with him but some mistakes losing Espargaro a second on the duo. In the time it took Quartararo to find a way past Marquez, the Frenchman dropped three seconds behind the leader, but as soon as he got some breathing room from the Hondas, he picked up the pace and reeled in Espargaro by lap six, who in turn was catching up with Mir once again.

By lap 10, the podium battle became an all-Ducati affair once more, Bagnaia, Miller and Bastianini starting to drop Mir from their exclusive group and the Suzuki man had a feisty Aprilia and Yamaha on his tail. Marquez was circulating in a rather lonely seventh position, over two and a half seconds behind the reigning world champion and with Zarco trying to bridge a one second gap to the Honda headliner. The Frenchman turned the timing screens red and was close enough to Marquez for a piggyback only a couple laps later.

Meanwhile, Bastianini had altered the order at the front slightly, attacking Miller at Garage Vert on lap 12, leaving Bagnaia without his wingman. Miller immediately dropped a second behind the duo and was about to come under threat from the trio behind but after doing the hard work in closing the gap, Mir crashed out of fourth at the final corner, as the race was entering its second half. Espargaro and Quartararo were left to reel in Miller, while Zarco was still struggling to find a way past Marquez in the fight for sixth place. The Frenchman’s mission was eventually simplified by the Spaniard running wide at La Chapelle with 11 laps remaining.

Back at the front, Bastianini was comfortably keeping Bagnaia company without showing any intentions until seven laps were left, when he made a first approach at the Dunlop Chicane and then sealed the deal at Garage Vert, helped by Bagnaia running well wide. Under pressure to recover the second he lost on his colleague, Bagnaia followed it up with a crash at the penultimate corner of the same lap.

With Bastianini running away at the front and showing impeccable pace all the way to the chequered flag, Miller inherited second, just outside of striking distance of Espargaro. Although the gap between them was just one second at the time, the Spaniard was focusing on the threat from behind, where Quartararo suddenly saw an opportunity for a podium on home soil. Although the Frenchman started the final lap only one tenth of a second behind Espargaro, he couldn’t find a way past the Aprilia man and had to settle for fourth. Behind the podium battle, Zarco, Marquez and Nakagami were cruising to the finish line with sizeable gaps around them, only Brad Binder enjoying some company in the battle for eight, until teammate Miguel Oliveira crashed out at turn four with three laps left. Taking avoiding action in the incident lost Pol Espargaro a top 10 position to the benefit of Luca Marini and Maverick Viñales.

The battle on track extended to the world championship standings, where Espargaro reduced Quartararo’s advantage to four points, with Bastianini only eight points back. Rins dropped to a 33-point deficit, while Bagnaia is seventh, with 46 points to recover.

2022 Le Mans Moto2 Race Result: Perfect Weather For A Cruise

After the weather gods exerted some revenge over the lightweight class, they were much kinder on Moto2 riders, who lined up on a sunny grid but missing one of the main characters, Sam Lowes declared unfit after his crash in qualifying. Regardless of who the rivals were, the spotlight was firmly on the Red Bull KTM Ajo duo that led from start to finish – but it’s the finish that matters most and that went Augusto Fernandez’s way. Benefiting from a mistake from his rookie teammate, the Spaniard climbed onto the top step of the podium for the first time since 2019 and was joined up there by Aron Canet and Somkiat Chantra, whose race-long battle was decided in the last few laps.

Poleman Pedro Acosta was the star for the first part of the session, the rookie making a perfect start to lead the way from teammate Fernandez, while fellow front row starter Jake Dixon lost ground off the line and was demoted by Albert Arenas, Alonso Lopez, Canet and a fast-starting Marcos Ramirez, who went from 13th to 5th on the opening lap. Ai Ogura also lost some positions at the start and dropped to 12th, while championship leader Celestino Vietti was lingering down in 20th. Things went even worse for two other stars of the season, Tony Arbolino and Fermín Aldueguer sliding out on the second lap, in separate synchronised incidents at turn six.

By lap four, the Ajo boys had extended a gap of over two seconds at the front, leaving Lopez to defend the final podium position from a sizeable group including Arenas, Canet, Ramirez, Beaubier, and Chantra, with Dixon crashing out of that fight at turn 13 at the end of that same lap. With Acosta and Fernandez untouchable at the front and biding their time for some friendly fire, the poleman could even afford a big moment out of the final corner and still increase their advantage. Five seconds behind, Canet had picked up the faraway pursuit by lap six and Lopez immediately threw away all the good work in a tangle with Arenas at turn seven, reducing the battle for third even further. After the sluggish start, Vietti was almost knocking on the doors of the top 10 with 16 laps remaining, but a ride through the gravel at Garage Vert instantly dropped him right back down to 20th.

After the calm of the first few laps, the (thankfully-metaphorical) storm suddenly arrived at the front on lap 11, when Acosta lost the front at La Chapelle and left Fernandez as the lone leader, six seconds ahead of the pending battle between Canet, Beaubier and Chantra. Another six seconds behind, Ramirez crashed out of fifth at the halfway point of proceedings, leaving Marcel Schrotter to fend off Ogura, while Vietti was still trying to rejoin the top 15.

With Fernandez thoroughly enjoying his gift at the front, Canet was eventually robbed of third by both Chantra and Beaubier at turn eight, dropping the Spaniard off the provisional podium with 10 laps remaining. Canet remedied that by attacking Beaubier at turn three a couple laps later and then a mistake from Chantra running wide at Garage Vert allowed both his rivals to breeze past. Meanwhile, teammate Ogura had gotten past Schrotter in the fight for fifth and championship leader Vietti found some late pace to approach the top 10 once again.

Fernandez easily managed a six-second gap over the last handful of laps, while all eyes were on Canet, who was under pressure from Beaubier, but the American was the first to crack, a wide approach at turn six dropping him half a second behind with two laps remaining and with Chantra glued to his rear tyre. The Thai rider showed a wheel here and there and was eventually successful at the penultimate corner going into the final lap. Fernandez and Canet cruised untroubled to the chequered flag over that last lap and Chantra held off Beaubier to keep the final podium position, but the American racer still scored a career-best fourth. After getting past Schrotter, Ogura enjoyed a pretty lonely ride to fifth, Schrotter settling for sixth ahead of Joe Roberts. Vietti made quick progress over the final couple of laps, climbing as high as eighth place after a yoyo of a race, with Jorge Navarro and Stefano Manzi rounding out the top 10.

Vietti’s late comeback helped limit the damage in the championship standings, the Italian still leading the way by 16 points from Ogura, while Canet climbs to third, 19 points back. Arbolino’s misfortune drops him to fourth, 38 points behind his leading compatriot.

2022 Le Mans Moto3 Race Result: Red For Rain, Orange For Victory

Grey clouds over Le Mans had a bit of a drumroll effect ahead of the lightweight class race and although the race started dry, drops of rain started appearing on camera before riders even completed the opening lap. A red flag was soon prompted by the small pile of bikes gathering in the gravel at the final corner, including the championship leader, and a new 14-lap race was scheduled from original grid positions. Although the restarted race was declared wet, the sun was back, shining brightly over the circuit as all riders lined up on the grid on slick tyres for a second attempt.

After Diogo Moreira aced the start to lead into turn two the first time around, poleman Dennis Foggia managed to hold into top spot a little while longer at the second try, but the rookie was back ahead into the Dunlop chicane. Meanwhile, Sergio Garcia made a much better start than his first one, to join the top three after the first few corners, fending off Jaume Masia and Tatsuki Suzuki. Despite the two fantastic starts, Moreira only lasted one lap in the lead before getting swallowed by the pack and dropping out of the top 10, a long lap penalty eventually separating him from the leading group.

With Foggia back in control at the front, Masia, Suzuki and Garcia continued to be his main challengers but with a big group still in tow, including Izan Guevara at the bottom of the top ten. Masia attacked at the start of lap four to take control of proceedings and held onto top spot despite Foggia’s advances over the next few laps. Garcia kept close but didn’t join the battle at the front until lap seven, when he attacked Foggia and was trying to find a way around his leading compatriot. While Deniz Öncü and Suzuki kept each other busy in the battle for fourth, Ayumu Sasaki was bridging the small gap that had appeared in the leading group and brought the rest of the top 12 back into contention, including the likes of Guevara, Carlos Tatay and Andrea Migno.

While Guevara was posting fastest laps a little further down the road, Masia continued unchallenged at the front, helped by the tussle between Foggia and Garcia, the Italian’s retaliation at turn four dropping the Spaniard out of the top five. Foggia chose to attack Masia with four laps remaining, reclaiming top spot while Sasaki and Suzuki were sniffing around Masia as well. Guevara had finally joined the top five, while a mistake from teammate Garcia, running wide at the Dunlop chicane, dropped him about a second behind the leaders for the final couple of laps.

Although Foggia started the final lap in the lead, Masia attacked him at turn three and although Sasaki got some brief airtime at the front on that last lap, the Spaniard retaliated at the penultimate corner to secure his second victory of the season. Sasaki settled for a return on the second step of the podium, while Guevara’s carbon copy overtake at turn 13 left Foggia off the podium and down in fourth, ahead of teammate Suzuki. Garcia spent the final couple of laps under fire from Tatay and eventually had to admit defeat to the CFMOTO rider who claimed sixth place. Ryusei Yamanaka, Öncü and Migno rounded out the top 10 positions, while John McPhee’s return from injury was straight back into the points with a 12th position, three seconds behind the winner.

Despite the less than ideal result for Garcia, the Spaniard continues to lead the world championship, with Masia and Foggia now tied on a 17-point deficit and Guevara 23 points behind his teammate.

2022 Le Mans MotoE Race 1 Result: Impeccable From Start To Finish

The first taste of racing action at Le Mans came courtesy of the MotoE cup, where Mattia Casadei put in a dominating display to claim a maiden victory in the class. The poleman was briefly challenged by a fast-starting Kevin Zannoni but Casadei quickly retaliated and started to build a gap at the front. That was aided by an early incident at turn three, where reigning cup champion Jordi Torres lost control and fell in the path of incoming bikes. Despite the scary incident that required a trip to the medical centre, the first reports were that the Spaniard avoided serious injury. The order in the pack shuffled quite a bit in the incident, allowing Casadei, Zannoni and Hikari Okubo to distance themselves by one second from the pursuit led by Dominique Aegerter. Matteo Ferrari was also part of that group, together with Hector Garzo, Miquel Pons and Alex Escrig, who had made fast progress from outside the top 10 on the grid, while Eric Granado lost ground early on and, unlike Jerez, never looked on course for a comeback.

Back at the front, Casadei managed to extend a seven tenths’ advantage over Zannoni, who in turn was dropping Okubo into Aegerter’s clutches, but Zannoni promptly picked up the pace and managed to bridge the gap to the leader by the halfway point of proceedings. Overtaking was another story and the first attempt came at the start of the final lap, but it proved unsuccessful and a final attempt at turn 13 ended with Zannoni joining the gravel trap. Casadei took the chequered flag with a sizeable advantage from Aegerter, who had attacked Okubo into turn three with two laps remaining, but the Japanese rider was happy enough to inherit a final podium position – his best result of the season.

Matteo Ferrari had a quiet ride to fourth, with the next group over four seconds down the road and with Garzo the winning party in the battle for fifth. Granado spent the final few laps of the race battling his teammate, with quite a bit of contact, but ultimately had to admit defeat to Pons. Niccolo Canepa, Andrea Mantovani and Alex Escrig rounded out the top 10 positions, the Spaniard dropping out of the battle for fifth after serving a long lap penalty for a shortcut at turn 10.

Despite the underwhelming result, Granado continues to lead the world cup standings, but Aegerter closes the gap to only six points, while Casadei makes up a handful of positions to trail the leader by 18 points.

2022 Le Mans Moto2 Qualifying Result: The Time Has Come

The final qualifying session of the day at Le Mans kept us on our toes, starting with a closely fought Q1 seeing the top five men covered by five hundredths of a second and the unlucky party being the world championship leader. Q2 followed it up with a dramatic crash, a fine save and the arrival of the Chosen One, Pedro Acosta improving his own lap record from earlier today as he secured a maiden pole position in Moto2. The rookie was unchallenged once he picked up the lead in the final four minutes of the session and ended the day one tenth of a second ahead of Jake Dixon. Augusto Fernandez joins his teammate onto the front row of the grid, while Sam Lowes started the session in prime position but then suffered a nasty high side at turn eight and quickly got punished on the timesheets, dropping back to fourth.

The Marc VDS rider will be in the company of Albert Arenas and the surprise addition to the intermediate class, Alonso Lopez, who qualifies sixth on his return to the paddock, only four tenths off pole. Aron Canet kept calm and claimed seventh, opening the third row of the grid ahead of Ai Ogura, whose session ended in the gravel at turn six, and Bo Bendsneyder, who successfully escaped Q1. Tony Arbolino rounded out the top 10, with Somkiat Chantra settling for 11th due to a late tumble at turn 10 and Jorge Navarro a decent 12th after going through Q1.

Marcel Schrotter, Marcos Ramirez and Lorenzo Dalla Porta make up row five, the Italian getting some airtime as he led the way in Q1 before performing a nice save for the highlights reel. Stefano Manzi opens row six ahead of Cameron Beaubier and Fermín Aldeguer, while championship leader Celestino Vietti had a tough task on his hands in Q1, missing out by six thousandths of a second and forced to defend his lead from 19th on the grid.

2022 Le Mans MotoGP Qualifying Result: The Best-Laid Plans…

The premier class started battle for pole position in the hottest conditions of the weekend at Le Mans and the expected fight between Pecco Bagnaia and Fabio Quartararo was just as hot as the track. The Italian started strong, straight into the 1:30s, but the Frenchman was quickly back ahead to lead after the first run. Bagnaia retaliated on the second run with a new all-time lap record, presumably in a rush to get back in time for Eurovision. The Italian also gave himself a nice buffer zone on the front row by helping teammate Jack Miller with a tow into second position, six hundredths behind the poleman. Quartararo got one final chance to respond but while he was doing that, a consistently impressive Aleix Espargaro pushed him off the front row and the world champion lost time in the final sector, being forced to start his home race from fourth on the grid.

Enea Bastianini finally managed to avoid anything too eventful on this particular outing and climbed as high as fifth on the grid, while Johann Zarco lost his record and a front row start in the last few minutes of Q2, dropping to sixth and possibly due a visit to the stewards’ office for getting in Pol Espargaro’s way. Despite a good showing from Alex Rins in the morning sessions and a successful escape from Q1 for Joan Mir, the Suzukis didn’t play a big part in the fight for pole, spending the whole session in the bottom half of the timing screens and opening third row, Mir ahead of Rins and Q1 leader Jorge Martin.

Meanwhile, in the Honda camp, things were about as gloomy as the weather prediction for the race, with Marc Marquez having to run his second machine following a late tumble in FP4 and then poor timing leaving him without a good reference for his final time attack. All he could do in clean fresh air - with added mistakes - was tenth on the grid, seven tenths off pole and top Honda rider. Teammate Espargaro and colleague Takaaki Nakagami will join him on the fourth row of the grid, while Marco Bezzecchi missed out on Q2 by seven thousandths of a second and not from a lack of effort, with a fast off-road adventure at turns 3-4 before joining the no-longer-that-exclusive 1:30 club.
