2018 Aragon Moto2 Qualifying Result: Robbed In Clear Daylight

The final piece of action for the day started in familiar fashion for the intermediate class, the fastest man setting camp at the top of the standings early on and calmly awaiting challengers. This Saturday, that man looked to be Marcel Schrotter, who put his FP4 learnings to good use and for 43 minutes looked on track to score his first pole position, until Brad Binder crashed the party and snatched that honour away. Binder went seven hundredths of a second faster with two minutes left on the clock and will start the race from pole and front row for the first time in the class.

Schrotter would have been disappointed with second after leading for so long but the German kept his machine in the middle of the front row, ahead of an excellent performance from Jorge Navarro as the first home rider on the timesheets. Alex Marquez started his attack with a fairly minor tip-off but recovered swiftly to start his home race from row two - his best time would have been enough for the front row but Navarro snatched it on countback. Pecco Bagnaia will look to extend his championship lead from fifth grid position and with Mattia Pasini breathing down his neck in sixth spot.

Fabio Quartararo also made the highlights reel with a second big save of the day, which was ultimately irrelevant on his way to seventh position. Lorenzo Baldassarri and Simone Corsi completed row three, with compatriot Luca Marini a subdued tenth spot. Augusto Fernandez also overcame an off track excursion to get onto row four, ahead of Xavi Vierge.

Joan Mir had another anonymous session in which he finished 15th but only half a second off the lead and getting some airtime as he impeded Pasini’s early attacks. After a reasonable showing on Saturday in Misano, Miguel Oliveira reverted to his qualifying woes of old, struggling to do any better than 18th and having to watch his teammate take pole in the meantime.
