Despite earlier rain proving a disturbance for the lightweight class, the breezy Phillip Island circuit allowed Moto2 riders to swap back to slick tyres barely five minutes into their final practice session. That led to only a handful of times being posted in the early stages until Marcel Schrotter decided to take the reins at the top of the pile by over a second. That gap was swiftly halved by Mattia Pasini before a couple of drops of rain made another inconsistent appearance for the day. The quantity was negligible and allowed Alex Marquez to join the pursuit but Schrotter fended off the threat with a pair of late red hot laps to secure top spot to the checkered flag.
Marquez settled for runner up position after a hairy moment aboard his Kalex, two tenths of a second off the leading German. That same gap separated the Spaniard from Miguel Oliveira, who was the more keen of the championship contenders to put in the laps in the tricky conditions. Augusto Fernandez was not intimidated by the changing weather and climbed up to fourth place, while Dominique Aegerter made a welcome appearance into the top five.
Sam Lowes was sixth, keeping ahead of Pasini by a minor five thousandths of a second, with Fabio Quartararo putting in serious laps down in eighth. Xavi Vierge and Jesko Raffin completed the top ten, with the likes of Luca Marini, Remy Gardner, Joan Mir and Stefano Manzi also within a second of Schrotter.
Championship leader Pecco Bagnaia was cautions and put in few laps on his way to 18th position, three ahead of flatmate Lorenzo Baldassarri, while Brad Binder’s 27th does not truly betray his speed after his session was affected by a big tumble in turn six. The South African only posted five laps, kept fastest time on the combined weekend’s running and gave his team a massive repair job ahead of qualifying.
