2019 Assen Moto2 FP1 Result: Lowes Holds Off Baldassarri

As if the cold weather needed any help to complicate FP1 for the intermediate class, Stefano Manzo did his bit and nudged Dimas Ekky Pratama into a significant crash that prompted a red flag as the unlucky Indonesian rider was getting medical attention. There was a hint of sun as the session resumed and the sun shone mostly for Sam Lowes, the Gresini rider picking up the lead for final five minutes.

Lorenzo Baldassarri had a more encouraging start to his race weekend than of late, the Italian only six thousandths of a second off the lead, while Jonas Folger surprised on only his second outing for the Petronas squad. Remy Gardner and Alex Marquez completed the top five with a time within a tenth of a second of the lead. Tom Luthi wasn’t too far back in sixth, ahead of another of the usual suspects, Jorge Navarro.

Brad Binder had a more encouraging morning in eighth and less than two tenths off Lowes, while rookie Fabio Di Giannantonio and veteran Marcel Schrotter completed the top ten. The likes of Luca Marini, Augusto Fernandez and Enea Bastinini missed out on top ten positions despite finishing within half a second of the leader, although Fernandez got an early lunch break due to an oil leak.
