2019 Assen Moto2 FP3 Result: Runaway Gardner

The intermediate class enjoyed lovely warm weather for their final practice outing of the race weekend but the replays from the gravel trap did not reduce too much. Not a problem that Remy Gardner had, the Australian posting the first and only 1:36 time of the weekend, which put him half a second ahead of the field and guaranteed a Q2 spot early on. Augusto Fernandez was the closest challenger but perhaps the biggest surprise came from Jorge Martin, the KTM rider making an impression in third position.

Marcel Schrotter missed out on the top three by only four thousandths of a second, edging ahead of rookie Enea Bastianini and veteran Tom Luthi. A fairly consistent Andrea Locatelli climbed into seventh spot, while Brad Binder failed to replicate his top achievement from Friday and dropped down to eighth on the combined standings, despite being only 12th fastest in FP3. Iker Lecuona and Alex Marquez completed the combined top ten, while the rest of the direct Q2 spots went to Tetsuta Nagashima, Fabio Di Giannantonio, Xavi Vierge and Luca Marini, the Sky rider destroying his bike at turn 7 in the process.

The likes of Sam Lowes and Jorge Navarro had even more eventful mornings, the British rider taking a tumble early into the session, while the Spaniard enjoyed very little track time before wiping out Somkiat Chantra and spending the rest of the session in the garage while the team was servicing his bike. Both riders failed to improve any further and their Friday times left them stranded in Q1. Lorenzo Baldassarri had a mornign to forget down in 17th, but at least he safely returned his machine in one piece ahead of Q1.

Remy Gardner has enjoyed a good weekend so far. This is a great result for Remy, but it's only practice. Hope R.G.87 has good qualifying and an even better race.
