2019 Sachsenring MotoGP FP4 Result: Viñales Harasses Consistent Marquez

The final practice session for the premier class heated up, mostly literally, and more realistic tyre choices filtered through, the softs mostly abandoned in their blankets to rest for qualifying. Presumably tired of Fabio Quartararo stealing his thunder, Marc Marquez found half a second on the competition early in the session and then wore them down with scarily consistent low to mid 1:22s. However, a mischievous Maverick Viñales couldn’t let the world champion get all the limelight and changed shoes to a fresh soft rear for the final handful of minutes, grabbing the headlines for seven hundredths of a second. Harassed by Yamahas from all sides, Marquez still looked rather untouchable and continued to post red sector times on 19-lap-old tyres on his way to second position.

Alex Rins was another of the very few riders to give the soft rear a shot but the experiment didn’t last too long and the Suzuki man reverted to a medium front-hard rear to end the session third, ahead of his fairly impressive teammate, Joan Mir climbing to fourth on fresh rubber late in FP4. Pol Espargaro performed some heroics of his own to join the top five, placing the KTM half a second off the leader. For a man who is handed crutches when stepping off the motorcycle, Takaaki Nakagami did a stellar job in the final practice session, finishing sixth and posting a fine run of laps.

Quartararo’s FP3 incident dented his enthusiasm a bit, the Frenchman working more cautiously towards seventh position as he recovers from a partially dislocated shoulder. Valentino Rossi, Franco Morbidelli and Aleix Espargaro completed the top ten ahead of the top Ducati, which ended up being the one of Tito Rabat. Andrea Dovizioso never seemed to get going and finished FP4 in 14th position, a full second slower than the leaders and with teammate Danilo Petrucci almost going missing down in 19th spot.
