2019 Silverstone Moto3 Qualifying Result: Sealing The Deal Early

It was never going to be a tame affair under the British sun for the lightweight class but it wasn’t the biggest of surprises when Tony Arbolino sealed the deal for pole position with a clever use of those quick 15 minutes. The VNE Snipers youngster improved the lap record by two tenths on only his second lap, before fooling everyone into a slow group tango on their final run. With the entire field living on the edge and cutting it fine for a one-lap shootout, most of it fell victim to rush hour traffic and left Arbolino to take home the expensive watch that comes with pole position.

Lorenzo Dalla Porta was the only rider in the same postcode as the poleman, the championship leader qualifying eight hundredths of a second behind. Rookie Raul Fernandez dug his way out of Q1 all the way onto the front row of the grid, despite being almost half a second slower than Arbolino. Ayumu Sasaki was also on a roll from Q1 when he went on to grab fourth position, while Niccolo Antonelli held on to fifth, despite a late tumble at turn 13. John McPhee fills the second row of the grid, seven tenths off pole.

Celestino Vietti opens row three, ahead of fellow rookie Ai Ogura and Leopard man Marcos Ramirez, while Sergio Garcia scores another good performance for the rookie gang in 10th place. The young Spaniard qualified ahead of Tatsuki Suzuki and Aron Canet, the title contender’s strategies not quite working out, whether it was a friendly tow from McPhee or having a go on his own. Canet will start 12th but in familiar company, ahead of Jaume Masia and Romano Fenati – all of them over a second slower than the pole time.
