After a wet morning, including the usual wet delays, World Supersport qualifying eventually started on a damp but drying track.
Yesterday's standout Kyle Smith opened with a 1'57.925 then a 1'56.948. On track for another quicker lap, he crashed out at turn five, losing the rear and laying the bike down, but was able to ride his bike back to his garage. Lucas Mahias and Jules Cluzel were around two seconds off Smith's quickest time in second and third places, with Federico Caricasulo and Randy Krummenacher over two seconds further off the pace behind them.
Ayrton Badovini joined the front runners, briefly holding second place until Jules Cluzel replaced him. Kyle Smith remained at the top and was back out on track to try to improve his lead. Badovini crashed at turn three with two minutes remaining, hoping none of the active riders could knock him off the front row as the clock ticked down.
Kyle Smith moved the target again, with a 1'56.476 putting over a second between him and second-quickest Jules Cluzel. Championship leaders Federico Caricasulo and Randy Krummenacher hit the flag in fourth and sixth place, sandwiching Lucas Mahias who watched on from his garage.
Kyle Smith, Jules Cluzel and Ayrton Badovini made up the front row for tomorrow's race, making it three Kawasakis in the front two rows, alternating with Yamahas.
