2020 Styria MotoGP FP2 Result: Espargaro Returns KTM To The Limelight

With rain once again rumoured for Saturday morning, premier class riders were quite eager to book a provisional spot inside the top ten. After the usual setup adjustments and long runs occupied the first part of FP2, the final dozen minutes were dedicated to a shootout but there was one common theme throughout the session and that was Pol Espargaro. The Spaniard was keen to return KTM to the top of the timesheets at their home track and did them proud by posting the fastest time of the day, leading the way for most of the session and demonstrating a nice pace in the low 1:24s. Takaaki Nakagami came closest to challenging the younger Espargaro but could only get within three tenths of a second.

The Suzukis continue to be quite strong at the Red Bull Ring, Joan Mir leading teammate Alex Rins inside the top four, although Rins seems to have the superior pace to challenge the leader. Maverick Vinales joins the top five, four tenths slower than Espargaro and narrowly ahead of Miguel Oliveira. Franco Morbidelli was the second placed Yamaha in seventh spot, ahead of the Aprilia of Aleix Espargaro, although the Spaniard did not improve enough to secure a top ten position on the combined standings. Similarly, Valentino Rossi made a late jump into ninth but will have to hope for a dry FP3 to secure a ticket directly into Q2. No such problems for Brad Binder, the South African rounding out the top ten in both FP2 and the combined standings, ahead of fellow rookies Iker Lecuona and Alex Marquez.

The likes of Fabio Quartararo, Andrea Dovizioso and FP1 leader Jack Miller had a low key afternoon outside of top 13 positions but the Ducatis’ Q2 spots were safe enough, while the Petronas rider’s time attack was plagued by off track executions that stopped his progress towards the top ten.
