2020 Styria Moto2 FP3 Result: Martin Makes His Mark

With the sunny conditions at the Red Bull Ring, the intermediate class was in no rush to challenge the hierarchy from Friday, so much so that there wasn’t much of a shootout at the tail end of the session. Jorge Martin was one of the few early improvers, the Spaniard becoming the fastest man of the weekend on only his fourth lap and keeping top spot to the checkered flag. Marco Bezzecchi also climbed into second in both FP3 and the combined standings, while Jake Dixon found some speed to jump into third and into Q2.

Augusto Fernandez in fourth was four tenths off top spot but the gaps behind him were getting ever smaller, Tom Luthi trailing the Spaniard by two hundredths of a second and with the same gap keeping him ahead of Enea Bastianini. Jorge Navarro progressed from his low key Friday to join the top seven in FP3, one tiny step ahead of Joe Roberts, Aron Canet and Remy Gardner, who rounded out the top ten.

Luca Marini was only half a second off the lead and his Friday time safely kept him into Q2, together with Marcos Ramirez, Nicolo Bulega and Sam Lowes. The Marc VDS rider caused a brief interruption in proceedings halfway through the session, when he seemingly suffered some sort of mechanical issue that caused him to highside at turn three. The substantial damage to the bike and subsequent trip to the medical centre for a check-up meant that Lowes was unable to rejoin the session but his best time from Friday was enough to keep him third on the combined timesheets and safely into Q2. That leaves the likes of Xavi Vierge, Tetsuta Nagashima and Marcel Schrotter to battle it out in Q1.
