Overwhelmed by clouds, the sun made its exit just as the battle for pole in the intermediate class got underway but no matter the weather, Luca Marini is a consistent force at the forefront of the action. The championship leader posted a lap record worthy time early into Q2 and never looked back, taking a second consecutive pole position. After escaping a feisty Q1, Jorge Navarro made a surprise first appearance of the season on the front row, two tenths slower than the poleman and a tenth quicker than the more familiar sight of Sam Lowes in parc ferme.
Fabio Di Giannantonio also thrived in Catalunya, climbing to the front of the second row, marginally faster than Jake Dixon and Marco Bezzecchi. Joe Roberts opens the third row of the grid after acing Q1, joined by Marcos Ramirez and Xavi Vierge. Remy Gardner completed the top ten positions but the Australian will serve a six place grid penalty for crashing under a yellow flag in FP2, promoting an underwhelming Enea Bastianini to the top of row four, together with Tom Luthi and Augusto Fernandez. The returning Jorge Martin will have to battle through from the fifth row, in the strong company of Marcel Schrotter and Nicolo Bulega.
