Although still on the chilly side, the Le Mans circuit had dried up nicely in time for the Moto2 show and it allowed the times to become more competitive. However, there was a bit of early drama as championship leader Luca Marini suffered a spectacular highside at turn 5, prompting a red flag for track clean-up. The Italian limped away and worryingly missed the remainder of the session as he visited the medical centre and then the local hospital with a suspected ankle injury.
Once the action resumed, times were quick to tumble, with many contenders for top spot, but Jorge Martin proved the most consistently fast of the lot. However, the Spaniard’s top time got cancelled and that promoted Jake Dixon into top spot, with Martin second. Marco Bezzecchi in third was three tenths slower than the leader, with Sam Lowes and Augusto Fernandez rounding out the top five.
Jorge Navarro, Aron Canet and Tom Luthi finished close behind, with Marcel Schrotter ninth despite a late crash at turn 8. Xavi Vierge completed the top ten, seven tenths off the leader. The remaining top 14 positions went to Somkiat Chantra, Joe Roberts, Stefano Manzi and Enea Bastianini, although the Italtrans rider was helped by a cancelled lap time for Marcos Ramirez, who dropped to 18th.
