The intermediate class enjoyed their first fully dry session of the weekend on Saturday morning but that did not seem to halt the gravel trap party at all. Joe Roberts spent most time at the top of the timing screens, with brief interruptions from the likes of Jorge Navarro and Marco Bezzecchi, but the American retook the lead on his penultimate flying lap, going on to crash at turn 8 on his final flying lap. One tenth down on the timesheets, Bezzecchi also closed the session with a tumble at turn 13, while Augusto Fernandez joined the top three without any incident.
Sam Lowes and Remy Gardner joined the top five only four tenths off the lead, with Navarro dropping to sixth, followed by Jake Dixon and Stefano Manzi. Luca Marini was back in action after a trip to the doctor’s office, where it was confirmed that the championship leader avoided any fracture in his dramatic flight on Friday. The Italian took it easy to begin with but then climbed into a solid ninth on the timesheets, with Marcos Ramirez rounding out the top ten.
The final places directly into Q2 went to Hector Garzo, Simone Corsi, Jorge Martin and Xavi Vierge, although only the Italian managed to avoid the gravel trap in FP3. Garzo ended the session on the service road at turn three, while Martin had a fast crash at turn 8 early in the session and could not rejoin as he visited the medical centre to be declared fit. Vierge opened and closed his session in the gravel trap but managed to hold onto the final Q2 spot.
Amongst the men not progressing to Q2 at the first try are Aron Canet, whose track time was limited by an early tumble, a pretty anonymous Tom Luthi and late-crashing teammate Marcel Schrotter, as well as championship contender Enea Bastianini. The Italian spent most of the session outside the top 20, for no obvious reason, before adding on a crash in the final shooutout and dropping to 27th on the timesheets.
