The sun shining over Le Mans came with a cold track and breezy conditions, making it a tricky proposition for the premier class on their final practice outing. The package deal also included several crashes and a red flag coming out 12 minutes into the session, when Miguel Oliveira’s KTM started smoking and leaking out of turn 7. After an impressively rapid clean-up operation, Fabio Quartararo resumed his even more impressive pace on worn rubber, although teammate Franco Morbidelli came within five thousandths of a second of demoting the Frenchman from top spot.
Maverick Vinales was not making much noise early on but a few setup changes gave him a boost into third place, with teammate Valentino Rossi making a late jump on the timesheets to score a top four Yamaha lockout. That demoted Pol Espargaro to fifth, although the KTM man seems to have the pace to keep up with the blue bikes ahead of him. Danilo Petrucci was the top Ducati man in sixth position, ahead of the lead Honda of Takaaki Nakagami, both men showing decent rhythm.
Jack Miller in eighth spot was the final rider to post a time within half a second of Quartararo, while Oliveira kept ninth despite crashing his second machine right after the red flag cleared. Cal Crutchlow rounded out the top ten ahead of Andrea Dovizioso, the duo half a second off top spot. The bad day continued for Suzuki, with Joan Mir only 14th on the timesheets and Alex Rins 18th after a late crash at turn nine – his second of the day.
