A sunny Portimao welcomed the premier class for Day 2 but riders struggled to make the most of the conditions and were slow to improve their times from Friday. The time attack started early to avoid any yellow flag concerns but after 15 minutes of battle, not everyone managed to go faster. A trio who had no such issues were Jack Miller, Miguel Oliveira and Takaaki Nakagami, the three riders trading top place for much of the session but in the end it was Miller robbing the home favourite by a tenth of a second. Oliveira continued his fine performance in second place, while Alex Rins shot into third in the closing stages of FP3 after spending the entire session outside of the top 10.
Andrea Dovizioso seems to be back on track and into fourth place, two tenths off the lead and narrowly ahead of Nakagami. Johann Zarco was one of the men who could not improve in FP3 but the Frenchman’s benchmark from Friday kept him comfortably into Q2 from sixth place overall. Fabio Quartararo and Pol Espargaro found some speed to advance into Q2 as well, while Maverick Vinales was the only other rider who could rely on his FP2 time to stay inside the combined top 10. The last ticket straight into Q2 was claimed by Stefan Bradl, the Honda rider only three tenths slower than the leader.
Those small gaps throughout the field left Franco Morbidelli, Aleix Espargaro and Brad Binder outside of the top 10, despite being less than half a second off Miller’s benchmark and will be joined by fresh world champion Joan Mir in Q1.
