Day 2 in Mugello for the premier class started even closer than it finished on Friday and even though Pecco Bagnaia kept prime position, he was one of the last riders to go faster than FP2. When he did, however, the Italian also claimed the all time lap record to start the morning a tenth or so quicker than championship leader Fabio Quartararo. In addition to the Ducati man, Brad Binder was the other rider a bit sluggish in finding time on Saturday morning but he turned it around in the final time attack to climb into an impressive third position.
Jack Miller and Johann Zarco completed the top five for Ducati, while Alex Rins made a late jump to sixth, having spent much of the session as the locomotive for Marc Marquez. Miguel Oliveira's seventh place ensured that both factory KTMs join Q2, with Joan Mir completing the Suzuki line-up as well. Pol Espargaro in ninth place was the sole Honda in a top 10 completed by Franco Morbidelli and covered by only four tenths of a second.
Maverick Viñales missed out on Q2 places by three hundredths of a second but a crash at turn 12 in the final couple of minutes was his undoing. Marc Marquez got some premium tows throughout the session and despite finishing down in 12th, the Spaniard was only half a second off top spot. Aleix Espargaro will also join his compatriots in Q1, as will Takaaki Nakagami and home hero Valentino Rossi, while Lorenzo Savadori in 19th position finished within a second of the leader.
