The second set of practice sessions started with clouds scattered around the track, to match the scattering of fans in the stands. The latter was much more welcomed than the former but rain kept away and riders got plenty of time to work on their pace and their place in the top 14. Gabriel Rodrigo set camp at the top of the timing screens early on but there were no significant improvements on the combined standings until the quick shootout at the end of the session. Once red sectors started cropping up, it was Rodrigo once more who posted the first and only 1:47 time of the day and set the new lap record on the revised layout.
After a more subdued FP1, Darryn Binder came within eight hundredths of a second of top spot, followed by Romano Fenati and the first of the home boys, Izan Guevara. The rookie finished three hundredths of a second ahead of Ayumu Sasaki, with Jeremy Alcoba in sixth position as the final rider within half a second of the leader. Tatsuki Suzuki in 8th place infiltrated the Italian brigade completing the rest of the top 10, with Andrea Migno in 7th, Stefano Nepa 9th and Niccolò Antonelli 10th.
FP1 leader Sergio Garcia finished 11th in the session but only dropped to 7th overall courtesy of his morning benchmark, while the remaining provisional top 14 positions went to Riccardo Rossi, Pedro Acosta and Filip Salac, despite the Czech rider being only 22nd in the session. The likes of John McPhee, Jaume Masia and Dennis Foggia will be hoping to make their move on Saturday morning, much like Deniz Öncü, who took a tumble at turn 2 early in the session and missed out on the rest of the day’s action.
