Action returned to the Sachsenring after the pandemic cut the fun in 2020 and it was a sweltering welcome for the lightweight class. Tatsuki Suzuki was fastest on the hot asphalt for much of the session, until John McPhee picked up top spot in the final minute of FP1. That dropped Suzuki to second, one tenth behind the leader and two more tenths ahead of Gabriel Rodrigo.
Stefano Nepa in fourth was over half a second behind McPhee, while championship leader Pedro Acosta made a solid start in the top five. Dennis Foggia climbed up to sixth, ahead of the Rivacold Snipers duo of Filip Salac and Andrea Migno. Deniz Öncü and Romano Fenati rounded out the top ten, while the rest of the provisional top 14 was occupied by Niccolò Antonelli, Jeremy Alcoba, Jaume Masia and Lorenzo Fellon. Sergio Garcia missed out by six thousandths of a second but FP1 times are expected to quickly tumble in FP2.

McPhee out?
I'm guessing with the way the season has gone for McPhee and now his crew chief has been taken off him (what has happened to Jake Dixon's Crew chief, why didn't they just swap over) and not able to ride next year in Moto3 due to his age, does anyone have a rumours what is possibly in the pipeline for John?
I'm guessing he won't be riding for Petronas next year and Dorna will be involved with getting him a Moto2 ride?
