The intermediate class the were last to sweat it out in the battle for pole at the Sachsenring and despite the headlines throughout practice, qualifying ended up telling a slightly different story. Keen to avoid the script for the premier class pole, Remy Gardner quickly moved to the top of the timesheets in Q2 but rivals had different ideas. The first to attack was Fabio Di Giannantonio, who looked like provisional pole after the first run, but then Raul Fernandez made his move on the second run, when most other riders struggled to improve. Not only did the Spaniard improve, but he also set a new lap record to secure his third pole in the class. Di Giannantonio and Gardner will be looking to exert their revenge on Sunday morning, starting right behind him on the front row of the grid.
Marco Bezzecchi worked some magic to escape Q1 and climb up to fourth, although over seven tenths off pole. Xavi Vierge and Jorge Navarro will join the Italian on the second row of the grid, as the last riders within a second of the leader. Sam Lowes took seventh place for little over a second, but his performance was hindered by an early crash at turn 1, which won’t have helped the soreness from his other crash at the Sachsenring. Ai Ogura and Q1 leader Bo Bendsneyder completed the third row, with Aron Canet, Nicolò Bulega and Joe Roberts making up row four.
Augusto Fernandez could not keep up his recent progress and qualified down in 14th, in between Somkiat Chantra and Jake Dixon on the fifth row and ahead of Marcos Ramirez, home favourite Marcel Schrotter and Albert Arenas.
