As the forecast made clear from the beginning, the weather wasn’t going to give riders an easy weekend in Assen but rain poured down even quicker than expected, soaking the track by the time the intermediate class resumed action for the afternoon session. Given the conditions, there was no time to be found on the combined standings and the battle for the top 14 moves on to Saturday morning but there was still a wet FP2 to be claimed. The top of the timesheets saw quite a collection of names while riders got accustomed to the conditions, but in the end it was Hector Garzo who proved quickest by three hundredths of a second. Despite his recent injury, the Spaniard led the way from compatriot Augusto Fernandez, who remained the fastest man of the day courtesy of his FP1 time. After briefly putting his name at the top of the timesheets, Nicolò Bulega stayed in the top three, while early session leader Aron Canet was fourth and half a second off top spot.
Joe Roberts, Sam Lowes and Jake Dixon also enjoyed short stints at the top before taking positions five to seven, while Xavi Vierge was the final rider to post a time within a second of the leader. Marco Bezzecchi and Fabio Di Giannantonio completed the top 10, while the Red Bull KTM Ajo duo that usually steals the headlines had a low key afternoon. Remy Gardner ended the session in 18th place, with teammate Raul Fernandez in 23rd position. Jorge Navarro also did not feature heavily in the session, having suffered a technical issue early in the session, which limited his running to only six laps. With FP3 expected to be back to dry conditions, there should be another opportunity to change the Q2 line-up on Saturday morning.
