After rain surprised the field on Friday afternoon, the lightweight class started Saturday on a dry track and with a mission to challenge the top 14 positions. Despite the improved conditions, improvements were slow on the combined timesheets and it meant that Tatsuki Suzuki remained the fastest rider overall with the time he set on Friday. However, it was Dennis Foggia who was fastest in the morning session, the Italian improving his top time early on and keeping his name at the top of FP3 throughout. While the habitual last minute stalking of rivals in pitlane and the ensuing outlap tango was not fully avoided, Romano Fenati was one of the few riders who skipped the shenanigans and rode on his own for the final time attack, getting rewarded with second in the session. Sergio Garcia also followed that example to climb into third, while John McPhee was one of the few riders who didn’t miss the cut for the final time attack and put in a final lap that promoted him to fourth.
Having dropped out of the top 14 on Friday, Deniz Öncü was particularly determined to change that and manged to do so in the final minute of the session, when he climbed to fifth. Teammates Elia Bartolini and Niccolò Antonelli performed well to join the top seven of the session, followed by Jeremy Alcoba and Kaito Toba. Gabriel Rodrigo rounded out the top 10 despite a crash on the final lap. Although Jaume Masia was 11th in the session, the Spaniard was the first to miss the cut for the combined top 14.
The likes of Pedro Acosta, Darryn Binder, Andrea Migno and Suzuki failed to improve their times from Friday but were fast enough on day one to remain in the combined top 14 places. With the exception of Migno, the rest of the foursome had a particularly challenging session, Suzuki and Binder taking a tumble at turn 7 early on, while Acosta was involved in a big crash at the final turn – a silly affair in a group riding at full speed and probably not realising they had already taken the checkered flag. Riccardo Rossi was also involved and walked away gingerly, hoping to be fit enough to give it another go in Q1.
