World Supersport qualifying culminates in Superpole, twenty minutes to determine the grid for this afternoon's race. Dominique Aegerter and Steven Odendaal dominated qualifying yesterday, and are favourites for the top two places.
Dominique Aegerter opened the session with a 1'37.856, just over a half second off his best time from yesterday, with Steven Odendaal a quarter of a second off his pace. A lap later, Philipp Oettl set a 1'37.766 on his second lap. Manuel Gonzalez, after two top-four sessions yesterday, remained in the top four.
On his fourth timed lap, Dominique Aegerter got within two tenths of the best Friday times with a 1'37.468, leading Oettl, Odendaal and an improving Randy Krummenacher as everyone pitted in for a new tyre with nine minutes remaining.
After the break, Hannes Soomer snuck up to second place as Dominique Aegerter set a 1'37.222, an outright lap record, finally beating his best time from yesterday. Hannes Soomer tucked the front into turn eight, his crash bringing out yellow flags. To add insult to injury, Philipp Oettl took his second place off him, a hundredth off Aegerter's pace.
A minute from the flag, Niki Tuuli and Federico Caricasulo crashed out in unrelated incidents. As the flag came out, Steven Odendaal took third place from Hannes Soomer and put himself on the front row. As Tuuli wandered around the track, post-crash, he got in the way of Raffaele de Rosa, ruining the Italian's fast lap. Tuuli lost is fastest lap as a result, dropping to tenth place, and Philipp Oettl also lost his best lap, thanks to skipping across the green paint, swapping places with Steven Odendaal but remaining on the front row.
Dominique Aegerter took pole position and the lap record ahead of Steven Odendaal and Philipp Oettl. The second row will be Hannes Soomer, Manuel Gonzalez and Randy Krummenacher, promoted thanks to Tuuli's demotion, with Jules Cluzel, Raffaele de Rosa and Federico Caricasulo.
