A nearly spotless sky awaited the intermediate class as they started their second rodeo at the Red Bull Ring and Ai Ogura was out to prove what he couldn’t quite prove last weekend, the rookie taking over top spot for the final ten minutes of the session. Despite some contact with a slow Simone Corsi on his final flying lap, Augusto Fernandez came within a hundredth of a second of top spot and finished ahead of early session leader Marcel Schrotter.
Styrian GP victor Marco Bezzecchi kept close in fourth, with compatriot Lorenzo Dalla Porta making significant progress to join the top five. Sam Lowes in sixth position was only two tenths of a second off the leader’s time, while Aron Canet displayed some enviable acrobatic skills as he avoided a crash from Cameron Beaubier early on and claimed seventh spot. Raul Fernandez, Somkiat Chantra and Albert Arenas completed the top 10 positions, with championship leader Remy Gardner just missing out, although less than four tenths off the lead.
Stefano Manzi, Tom Luthi and Fabio Di Giannantonio provisionally took the remaining top 14 positions but the hierarchy is likely to change, with the top 25 riders covered by one second in FP1.
