The conditions at Barcelona were cooler than yesterday which promised fast lap times for World Supersport qualifying.
Philipp Oettl took the top spot off Manuel Gonzalez after one flying lap, but Gonzales struck back with a 1'45.004 on his second lap as the rest of the field was over three tenths off. Early on the session, there were only two Yamahas in the top six, with Nikki Tuuli joining three Kawasakis under four tenths off Gonzalez's time as riders started to pit in. Yamahas filled the next fourteen spots.
After the break, Randy Krummenacher joined the top riders, but it was Raffaele De Rosa who took the top spot with the first 1'44 of the weekend with a 1'44.999 until Krummenacher sliced a quarter of a second off the pole time with a 1'44.749 with Niki Tuuli three tenths behind him.
Manuel Gonzalez got in on the increased pace game with under two minutes left, setting a 1'44.593 to knock Krummenacher down to second as the clock. Patrick Hobelsberber lost a fast lap to the green paint on the last corner and the flag came out.
With nobody able to trouble the front row with the flag out, Manuel Gonzalez took pole position ahead of Randy Krummenacher and Niki Tuuli. Steven Odendaal snuck into sixth place at the flag, joining Raffaele De Rosa and Philipp Oettl on the second row.
Dominique Aegerter's absence this weekend is Steven Odendaal's chance to make inroads into Aegerter's sixty two point lead, and a second row start isn't ideal. Randy Krummenacher's team switch paid off, giving him his first podium of 2020. Manuel Gonzalez continues to demonstrate that he's a future talent, following up his win at Magny Cours with a pole position.
