2021 Catalunya World Supersport Race One Result: The Rain In Spain?

World Supersport race one was 18 laps of a 33ºC track. David Sanchis Martinez started from the back of the grid due to a tyre pressure infringement.

However, things wouldn't go as planned.

Can Oncu pushed Randy Krummenacher out of line to take the lead into turn one as drops of rain hit the track. Randy Krummenacher was pushed down to tenth place and he fought through immediately to recover a few places. Manuel Gonzalez and Steven Odendaal followed Oncu over the line to start the second lap. Into a damp turn one, Can Oncu and Steven Odendaal missed the braking into turn one, handing the lead to Manuel Gonzalez as the rain got much, much worse, sweeping across the first half of the track.

The white and red rain flags were being waved and almost everyone pitted in to get new tyres. Much like last year, Loic Arbel and Shogo Kawasaki stayed out, but unlike race winner Andy Verdoia last year, staying out likely wouldn't pay off. Riders were not under pressure to quickly change tyres as there is a minimum intervention time in World Supersport. Manuel Gonzalez spent too long as his team dealt with an issue, however.

Steven Odendaal was the first of the riders to come out of the pits, skating around corners on wet weather tyres, thirty three seconds off Arbel's slick lap, with Philipp Oettl and Randy Krummenacher behind him. Verdoia crashed out with Eduardo Montero Huerta after getting new tyres, the pair ending their race in the gravel.

Fastest laps started to pour in, with Randy Krummenacher and Manuel Gonzalez both setting fastest laps from fourth and tenth place. Loic Arbel in the lead was eleven seconds a lap slower than Steven Odendaal with just eleven seconds of a lead at the start of lap six. Randy Krummenacher was three seconds a lap quicker than Odendaal, passing Philipp Oettl on his way to third place.

Steven Odendaal rode cautiously as he closed on Loic Arbel, and Randy Krummenacher took second place off him as he started lap seven and Krummenacher tapped his rear seat a few times to tell Odendaal to tuck in for a tow instead of trying to pass. Odendaal couldn't keep up as Kruumenacher took the lead.

Steven Odendaal was the quickest in the pits and the reason was that his team was too quick, sending him out under the pit intervention limit which would make his place on track irrelevant as he would take a 25.845 second penalty at the flag, after the calculators came out. Philipp Oettl took a 1.995 second penalty for his missing the intervention time.

Manuel Gonzalez set a fastest lap of 1'59.914 on lap eight

At half race distance, Randy Krummenacher set the fastest lap until Raffaele De Rosa took it off him. Steven Odendaal and Philipp Oettl were sat in second and third place on track, with Manuel Gonzalez, Can Oncu and Raffaele De Rosa ahead of slick-tyres Loic Arbel, whose tyres were in better shape to take him to the end of the race. Randy Krummenacher then set a 1'58.428 for another fastest lap. Loic Arbel's lap in seventh place was under three seconds slower than the riders around him, as he set another personal best on slicks.

Another lap and another fastest lap by Randy Krummenacher over seven seconds in the lead. Second placed Steven Odendaal's penalty would put him in eleventh place at the flag. Twenty eighth placed Michel Fabrizio set a 1'54.006 to claim the fastest lap over a lap behind the leaders and a lap later, he set a 1'52.475 and a 1'49.275 to eventually Dunlap himself.

The fight over fourth place was held between Manuel Gonzalez, Raffaele De Rosa and Can Oncu, but taking Odendaal's penalty into account, they were unknowingly fighting for the last spot of the podium. As Manuel Gonzalez closed on Philipp Oettl, he put himself into second place, in spite of being fourth on the track. He made it more official by passing Oettl. Oettl got caught in traffic after being overtaken and was passed by Oncu and De Rosa immediately.

Loic Arbel started lapping at the speed his tyres had in them and climbed up to ninth place, closing on eighth. De Rosa and Oncu slapped their bikes together into turn one of lap sixteen, De Rosa having to fight to get fourth place back.

Starting the last lap, Randy Krummenacher led Manuel Gonzalez by over sixteen seconds. Raffaele De Rosa was on Gonzalez's tail with Can Oncu two seconds behind. Manuel Gonzalez looked at ways past Steven Odendaal, but as he tried to pass the penalised rider, De Rosa took advantage to pass Gonzalez. De Rosa then passed Steven Odendaal and Gonzalez followed him through and pushed his way past De Rosa to take second place on track back. He held second place at the flag, but it was Randy Krummenacher who won by over sixteen seconds, demonstrating what he was capable of on a decent bike. Raffaele De Rosa rounded out the podium ahead of Can Oncu and Philipp Oettl. Loic Arbel's risk paid off with a sixth place.

Steven Odendaal's pit infringement pushed him back to eighth place, missing out on an opportunity to capitalise on Dominique Aegerter's absence. Aegerter leads the championship by fifty four points.
