The weather stayed sunny and welcoming for the lightweight class qualifying sessions and the spectators had a little more than that to celebrate, with pole position disputed between some of the home favourites. The only man able to stop Dennis Foggia from getting his first Tissot was Romano Fenati, the class veteran timing his final flying lap to perfection to secure pole on home soil by a quarter of a second. After showing the way for much of Q2, Foggia dropped to second, while a twitch at the final corner cost Niccolo Antonelli a good chance at pole as well. Andrea Migno joins an all-Italian top 4 on tomorrow’s grid, with Jaume Masia and Xavier Artigas completing the second row of the grid.
Riccardo Rossi and Elia Bartolini added some more local flavour to third row, lining up alongside the championship leader, Pedro Acosta, eight tenths off to spot. Carlos Tatay aced Q1 on his way to 10th place and will be sharing fourth row with Stefano Nepa and Sergio Garcia. Row five was claimed by Ayumu Sasaki, Darryn Binder and a particularly impressive Matteo Bertelle, who sailed through Q1 to join the pole battle.
Not everyone was having as much fun in Q1, with the likes of John McPhee and Tatsuki Suzuki crashing early in the session. While the Petronas man’s early benchmark was only six hundredths of a second short of Q2, Suzuki did not get a chance to post a time and will start at the back of the grid. There were some notable absences on Saturday afternoon, with Deniz Oncu and Alberto Surra sitting out the sessions after big crashes in FP3 and Gabriel Rodrigo being declared unfit to race.
