World Superbike was fifteen minutes of qualifying, with riders getting two of their three Pirelli SCX tyres. Pirelli restricted the SCX to just this session and the Superpole race on Sunday, deeming it unusable for the feature races. Alex Lowes was ruled unfit and didn't get to take part in qualifying.
Jonathan Rea opened qualifying with a blistering 1'40.697 on the qualifying tyre, with Toprak Razgatlioglu second quickest, in spite of transponder issues, ahead of Michael van der Mark. Scott Redding and Andres Locatelli knocked van der Mark down to fifth after setting late first laps, avoiding traffic. Leon Haslam also wedged a lap to split Rea and Razgatlioglu as everyone else was in the pits.
Jonathan Rea and Tito Rabat were the first riders out of the pits, followed by Eugene Laverty and Jonas Folger who was still outside the 107% limit for qualifying. Rea immediately set a 1'40.524 as a target, three tenths quicker than everyone's first lap. Eugene Laverty crashed out at turn thirteen, but riders that encountered the brief yellow flag before he picked his BMW up were on out laps, not setting times.
As the flag came out, Toprak Razgatlioglu, down in fifth place, hit the flag as the only man on a fast lap, setting a new lap record of 1'40.219 to claim pole position, knocking Jonathan Rea into second place.
Toprak Razgatlioglu sat in pole position, ahead of Jonathan Rea and Leon Haslam. Scott Redding headed Michael van der Mark and Alvaro Bautista on the second row, with Andrea Locatelli, Garrett Gerloff and Loris Baz rounding out the third row.
