The asphalt got a bit warmer and the wind calmed down a touch in preparation for Moto2 qualifying but the improved conditions just confirmed what we already knew, that Aki Ajo’s boys are unstoppable this season. Raul Fernandez was circulating on lap record pace straight away and then improved further to give himself a comfortable advantage at the front. Remy Gardner was slower to warm up and started the final time attack down in 17th position but eventually closed the gap to his teammate to only two tenths of a second. The title contenders will be joined on the front row by Fabio Di Giannantonio, who cruised through Q1 to finish four tenths off pole.
Aron Canet looked set for a top two until a late crash at turn 13 cost him the front row and dropped him to fourth. After a tricky start to his weekend, Augusto Fernandez made solid progress to line up fifth on the grid, ahead of an impressive Cameron Beaubier. Marco Bezzecchi and Sam Lowes are pretty used to sharing space on the grid, just not as low as third row usually, with rookie Ai Ogura joining them there.
Jorge Navarro opens the fourth row of the grid ahead of Xavi Vierge and Hector Garzo, while bruised Q1 escapee Marcos Ramirez joins row five together with Celestino Vietti and Marcel Schrotter. Hafizh Syahrin, Stefano Manzi and Albert Arenas finished the session over a second down on the poleman and making up row six. Crashes for the likes of Joe Roberts and Jake Dixon left them out of Q2 contention and on the lower half of the grid.
