Rain was an unexpected surprise on Friday morning in Valencia and although it had stopped by the time the intermediate class took to the track, the asphalt was left soaking wet and it encouraged quite a few off-track adventures. Augusto Fernandez managed to avoid any of that on his way to prime position in FP1, the Spaniard taking over from Joe Roberts for the final couple of minutes. The American lost out by only two hundredths of a second, with Hector Garzo taking third despite a late crash at turn 11. Barry Baltus also joined the crash list after claiming fourth, while Aron Canet completed the top five ahead of the SKY racing duo of Celestino Vietti and birthday boy Marco Bezzecchi.
Fermín Aldeguer looked good in 8th, with Nicolò Bulega and compatriot Lorenzo Baldassarri rounding out the top 10 positions. With improved conditions expected for the rest of the weekend, the title contenders seemed to be in no rush to climb the timesheets, Raul Fernandez spending FP1 down in 12th place, eight tenths off top spot, while teammate Remy Gardner was 20th, two seconds behind the leader.
The man who least enjoyed the conditions was Sam Lowes, the Marc VDS rider suffering a big high side at turn 5 only a handful of minutes into the session and walking away gingerly but unable to rejoin the action. One man missing completely from proceedings this weekend is Ai Ogura, the rookie ruled out after suffering a leg fracture last weekend.
