2022 Qatar Moto2 Qualifying Result: More Contenders Than Expected

The intermediate class kicked off their first qualifying session of the season in rather dark and dusty conditions but nothing too concerning in their chase for time. Rookie Filip Salac definitely did not look concerned as he set camp at the top of the timesheets early in Q2, but the Marc VDS duo had different plans for the final couple of minutes of the session, when Sam Lowes and Tony Arbolino swapped top spot. The British rider seemed to have the final say as he posted the first 1:58 time of the session, but a track limits infringement saw that time cancelled and handed the first pole position of the season to Celestino Vietti. The Italian placed his name at the front when it mattered, on the final flying lap, and benefitted from Lowes’ mistake to bring his new Mooney VR46 team to the forefront. Tony Arbolino inherited second position for his first front row start in the class, with teammate Lowes completing the front row of the grid.

Although missing out on the front row by six hundredths of a second, Salac still impressed with fourth position and will be starting ahead of more established names in the intermediate class, such as Ai Ogura and Augusto Fernandez. A cancelled lap time for Jake Dixon dropped him to seventh on the grid, sharing third row with Q1 graduate Fermin Aldeguer and Aron Canet. Although impressive throughout practice, things did not go quite to plan for the Red Bull KTM Ajo boys and particularly for Pedro Acosta, who looked fast but crashed at the final turn with four minutes remaining and dropped to 10th, ahead of Cameron Beaubier and Jorge Navarro. Marcel Schrotter could not improve on 13th grid position due to a late tumble at turn 2 and will open fifth row from Joe Roberts and Q1 leader Albert Arenas.
