2022 Assen World Superbike Superpole Result: Windy Weather Wobbles

Assen is a track that doesn't rely on long straights to provide entertainment, with sweeping corners and fast chicanes challenging riders and providing close racing. The top three men in the title chase sit in the top three places heading into this session, with Iker Lecuona fourth quickest. Eugene Laverty was unable to take part in Superpole after being declared unfit after Free Practice one yesterday.

After one lap, Jonathan Rea briefly held the top spot only to have Toprak Razgatlioglu set a 1'33.846 and take provisional pole by almost half a second. Michael Ruben Rinaldi crashed out at turn fifteen, slipstreaming Alvaro Bautista, and ended his session. His rear wheel lifted as he braked into the turn and the wind lifted his bike, creating a wobble when the rear touched down at a different angle. He bailed off as his bike hit the gravel and made his way back to the pits without his bike.

Into the tea break, Razgatlioglu led Rea and Alex Lowes while Andrea Locatelli was fourth quickest ahead of Bautista and Philipp Oettl who has been showing some pace at Assen.

After the break, Axel Bassani slipped into fourth position, but the fast riders had yet to post laps. Alvaro Bautista pushed his way up to third place, but Alex Lowes, Andrea Locatelli and Garrett Gerloff pushed him down to sixth place. Toprak Razgatlioglu, however, obliterated Rea's 2017 lap record with a 1'32.934.

Toprak Razgatlioglu took pole position with an impressive lap almost half a second off second-quickest Alex Lowes. Jonathan Rea completed the front row behind his teammate as Razgatlioglu's teammate Andrea Locatelli headed up the second Row. Alvaro Bautista held on to fifth place, getting a second fast lap out of his qualifying tyre, with Garrett Gerloff sixth. Loris Baz, fastest BMW after Redding headed to the gravel, led the third row, alongside Iker Lecuona and Axel Bassani.
